Not getting interviewed

I left a career-high role last year. I’m financially comfortable and wanted to return to the public-facing role where I started (think ward nurse, bobby on the beat, shop worker etc).

I am applying for small, part time roles on a fraction of my previous salary, and not even getting an interview. I feel that I have so much to offer and good contacts in the industry and it’s disheartening I can’t even get a basic job.

What am I doing wrong?

Yes, I just wish they’d interview me to check. My references are past colleagues and I state that I left to pursue opportunities to return to the frontline alongside my volunteering.

I’ve picked up some good advice here, and there are a couple of posts I haven’t responded to yet because they have been very thought-provoking Smile

I worked out each interview cost us nearly £400 - we don't interview to check.

It's a very tough job market too. I am 55 and an ex teacher who is looking for roles outside education- just so sick of the politics amongst other reasons. I have no interest in climbing the greasy pole again, would just like a less involved and stressful job. Is that a crime? As I've also got some customer service experience have been applying to admin and receptionist posts, so far without success. And yes, I have also left out some qualifications on my CV including a degree in Psychology. Since doing that I have got an interview- woo hoo but we shall see if I get the job...

I had this when I left a professional role I was qualified for and wanted to move into an admin role. I couldn't get an interview until I started using recruitment agencies. They were able to explain that I wanted to leave my profession permanently and reassure the companies that I wasn't just using the position as a stop gap to pay the bills. I think most of the employers barely glanced at the covering letter I had typed when I was applying by myself because I had a lot of "you're overqualified" responses.
