Not being offered a second interview

Is it usual to be informed that you're not going to be offered a second interview?

Not a recruiter, small organisation, so bit unsettled to not even receive a 'thanks but no thanks' email.

Well, except they'd obviously made a decision, which is the time consuming thing, and a quick email would have been courteous.

I'm sorry about your dad.

Thank you - it's still recent. But a rejection email is not quick for us - we really think about it, we really want to do things right. Someone took the time to talk to us and we rejected them - we don't feel we can just say - thanks but no thanks...so the rejection email gets a lot of thought. It was hard for me to put my grief aside - the candidate didn't need to know what I was going through - I'm just saying sometimes it's not about people being crap or rude.

Well, they were quick enough to send one after I'd emailed them, so clearly capable of doing so.

I disagree that it's not rude tbh.

Thanks **christinarossetti19
It’s good to hear of others positive stories after multiple rejections... onwards and upwards!

This is so hard. I no longer fit in the work area that I've done for 25 years, but don't seem to fit in anywhere else either

I know its disappointing not to get a second interview but please don't go down the path of feeling this way.

You got a first interview - which means that your cv/application is landing interviews. That means in writing you are being seen as in the shortlist of people they want for the job.

Not getting though the interview can happen for so many different reasons:

  • ok you might not have done a good interview
  • you might have done a great interview but other candidates have done better
  • someone else might have been a better fit with the team

Dust yourself down and move on to the next one. The right job will come along.

Thanks GintyMcGinty but unfortunately that is the situation - the area that I've worked in for years has morphed into something quite different (and not something that I believe in, so don't want to upskill) so am looking to move slightly sideways.

I think the isolation of lockdown/remote working is really taking its toll on me now, certainly in terms of self-confidence.
