Hi hope you are all well I recently applied for a job well before the closing date and I received an email back saying we can confirm we have received your application and will be in touch after the 31st(closing date) do you think this means they will contact me for an interview??
I don't want to get my hopes up but this would be my dream job
My mum said they may get in touch to say they don't want to interview me but I don't think companies do this do they
I've been a sahm for 7 years this is my first venture back to employment and it's so nerve wracking other jobs I have applied for haven't been in touch either way
Really trying not get my hopes up but rejection is horrible
Thanks for reading x

Some companies will let you know if you haven't been successful so I'd say it could still go either way.

Siennabear · 24/05/2021 19:49

It’s an acknowledgment they have received your application. Time will tell. Good luck.

Ted27 · 24/05/2021 19:51

It could be either. They have contacted you to confirm receipt. Its several days yet to the closing date. They won’t make decisions until after that date about who to interview

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/05/2021 19:54

I think it means that they are confirming they have got your application, nothing more than that unfortunately.

When job hunting I find it's best not to get too hung up on dates and timescales, a lot of employers ime don't stick to them

viques · 24/05/2021 20:06

I think it means that they won’t contact any applicants until after the closing date to allow for up to the wire applicants to get their applications in.

It is not clear from their reply whether they will contact all applicants ( some to say sorry to, others to call for interview) or if they will only be contacting applicants they want to interview. Many companies only do the second, which is understandable if they have had hundreds of applicants, but is still rude IMO.

In any case, you need to allow them a couple of days to review the applications and sort them into interview/ don’t interview. The person or people tasked with this will need to check applications against their criteria. If it is a large company they will have set aside time and a date to do this. If they find they have a lot of applications then it is likely that if they spot applications which are poorly written, badly spelled, written in fancy font, don’t meet basic criteria then these will be binned first.

I am not saying your application is like this, but after a gap you really need to make sure that your application gets past the bin. If you are not sure there are lots of ways to update your cv and application skills to maximise your chances.

Good luck.

Sorry, but it’s just a generic confirmation email. It’s like when you email a company and they give you an immediate system generated confirmation response - it doesn’t mean a human has looked into your query yet or will definitely say yes etc.

It could just be that the recruiters aren’t going to start sifting through emails until the deadline as presumably they want to assess all applicants at once etc

purplefoxglove · 24/05/2021 20:34

Ithink it hopefully means you've found an employer who likes to communicate with candidates - that's a good thing - but it doesn't mean anything with regards to your application success.
Good luck I was out of the workplace for 14 years - it takes a lot of courage to return.

A few back to work tips for you OP

Don't put all your eggs in one basket, irrespective of whether you do get an interview for this job, apply for more than one.

Dont hype up the job in your own mind as being a 'dream job' - it's unlikely to be. You can only hope the role spec they are advertising is reasonably accurate, but some employers do overstate a job to make it sound more interesting. Yes, it may be the hours and the salary you want, but it may not be the role you think. Be cautious.

As previously stated, dates are indicative, they may not stick to them. How will you feel if the actual closing date doesn't end up being until 6th June - ie don't put your whole life on hold, so to speak, waiting for the magic closing date to come around. Another reason for you to have more irons in the fire, and a few more potential interviews.

Don't be surprised if your first interview doesn't bag you the job. You may need a few tries at it. All good practice. It's a numbers game.

I'm not trying to be the Prophet of Doom but just suggesting you build up some resilience so you avoid the thing you fear (ie the rejection) and see it as good experience back into the world of work. Good luck!

I’ve always had a response whether it be “you have been unsuccessful on this occasion” or “we would like to offer you an interview”

I hope you do get an interview if it’s something you like!

Do you work in the public sector, that is not my experience in the private sector at all and not that of my family either

I've applied for several jobs where you get to a point that you know silence means you haven't been successful.

flowery · 25/05/2021 16:35

Could be either as others have said. I was recruiting recently and I emailed everyone acknowledging their application and confirming when I’d be shortlisting and that they’d hear from me at that point. Some were selected for interview some not.

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair
I work in private sector. Perhaps it depends on how nice the company are? Grin

I've been in employment for quite some time and applied for a good number of jobs over the years it's always been the way. My own children are of an age where they have applied for part time jobs and positions post school and have found the same thing

I think it's probably a combination of a lot of applications, a general lack of thought for the applicants and some HR people being a bit rubbish.

24GinDrinkingOnceTheKidsInBed · 25/05/2021 16:49

Absolutely; I also live fairly rurally with quite a low population.. less applicants.. more time to reply!

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 25/05/2021 16:51

It's just a form email acknowledging your application. That's all. Sorry.

It's really best to move on mentally after every submitted application and assume you didn't get it. For many applications now you simply won't ever hear anything and that means rejection. Let it go from your mind and focus on finding new opportunities and applying to them, right up until you accept a job offer. Let it be a nice surprise if you ever hear from them.

ShoutingBirb · 25/05/2021 18:08

That's just a generic acknowledgment. We notify all applicants in this way that we've received their application.

Sometimes we receive 70 applications, but can only interview 10.

berryhead2013 · 25/05/2021 19:37

Thank you all have given my head a wobble it was nice to get confirmation though
Will keep on applying and assuming rejection then I cant be disappointed
Thanks again x
