Hi, I'm being contacted later this morning by a potential employer asking for my services. I work in Healthcare, am employed by a Trust. But cam work independantly too. Am I taxed more for this potentiallly being my 3rd or 4th job??? I have NO idea, but don't want to break any laws or pay out more in Tax & therefore be working for very little. I can set myself p as a self employed Locum, but may not be able to in time for this role starting-ie when they need me to start. I don't need this job, they have contacted me!!!

I think, the one with the biggest income get them to use your normal tax code, then the other ones will be BR (basic rate) which is 20%

Aprilx · 21/05/2021 11:24

You will be taxed on your income, it does not matter if the income is from one or four different jobs. So no you will not be taxed proportionally more because you have an extra job, you will only be taxed more (in absolute terms) because your income is higher.

You don’t get any personal allowance on a second job. So all your free personal allowance will sit with your trust job, you therefore be taxed on every £1 from anything else.

When you look at your payslip it will feel like you're being taxed more, but it's only because you use up all your personal allowance on your first job.

You're being taxed the same if you have more than one job, similar to if you worked double the hours in your original job you wouldn't take home double the pay (because of personal allowance and also potentially higher rate tax on some of the extra if you get paid enough.)

You need to weigh up whether the extra is worth the loss if your free time.

This is assuming you are earning enough to pay tax on your first job and using all your “tax free” allowances which is approx £12.5k per annum. If you are earning under this, your second job would have the balance of allowances set against your earnings there.

Your tax is based on your total income from all sources. It doesn’t matter if it’s one job or twenty.

You don’t need to set yourself up as a self employed locum if you are happy to be on their payroll (is this an option)? Just tell them to tax you at basic rate as you have another job.

You’ll need to inform/request permission from your NHS employer for secondary work.

TippledPink · 31/05/2021 15:38

I do two jobs and they moved part of my tax free allowance to the second job. I also pay 40% on some of my earnings. As others say you pay the same tax overall. If you somehow overpay tax you will get a rebate the next year so I wouldn't be too worried.

You’ll be paying 40% on anything you earn over £37k...... so doesn’t matter, because at the end of the tax year it will be all out in one pot
memberofthewedding · 13/06/2021 03:04

If you work for a number of employers it may be worth your while to set up as self employed as you can claim more back by way of expenses.

BettyBurntBuns · 13/06/2021 03:13

Sorry @TippledPink I thought you where the OP!

@memberofthewedding I think the OP does need financial help as they seem in a pickle.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 13/06/2021 04:08

If you have 2 jobs you can do a self assessment at the end of the year to make sure the tax is right. You may be able to claim for uniforms & professional fees as well through self assessment.

ZealAndArdour · 13/06/2021 04:13

You need to speak to an accountant if you’re considering going self employed and taking on Locum work, lots has just changed with IR35 coming in.
