Big dilemma - urgent help needed

I've changed my name for this, and I'm afraid it's a long question but I'd really appreciate your thoughts as I have to decide this weekend what to do.

My company's going through a reorganisation and there will be redundancies.

I don't know for certain if my present job is under threat, but my department will be reorganised.

I don't want to be made redundant - I have a good salary and enjoy working for this company, although I (and others) don't get on well with my present boss and few people trust him. We think his position may be under threat anyway as he has failed to deliver a major project and doesn't seem to be well thought of higher up the organisation.

I have just been offered a year-long placement in another department in the same company working for someone who values me very much.

My present boss is willing to release me, and I suspect will not put in anyone to replace me in my current position.

I'd keep my salary, and I could either go to the new department for a year and do just that, or split the new job with elements of my present job.

I think splitting the jobs would be more stressful but might safeguard my position..but then again, it might not.

Just going to the new department (where there's more than enough work to do) would be more enjoyable and less stressful..but there's no guarantee of work there beyond one year.

At the end of it, I might find my current post has been closed and I'd face redundancy - but my present job might be made redundant even if I stay.

I doubt very much that my current boss will tell me the truth if I ask him what his plans are - but I could ask.

Your thoughts please!

My gut reaction is to go to the new role. If you are valued, then a place is more likely to be found for you within the same company once the year is up.

Yes, my gut reaction is to go to the new department - but I want to be pragmatic too as redundancy is the last thing I want.

Gut instinct is to say go. You sound a versatile employee who could be 'reassigned' to various parts of the company if there are cutbacks during a reorganisation.

USAUKMum · 16/11/2007 13:05

I'd say go for the new role as well. Do fantastic work for the person who values you highly, and I would bet that they would find a place for you in their department. It is hard to get good people.

RibenaBerry · 16/11/2007 13:30

I'd say go. Even if there are redundancy issues when you come back, you'll have two new things in your favour:

  • a boss who really values you pushing the redeployment options with higher management; and
  • new skills.

As you say, if you stay you could be made redundant anyway.

WideWebWitch · 17/11/2007 16:42

Go for the new job. Because

a) you won't be made redundant there or, if you are, it'll be another year
b) you like them
c) you don't like current boss
d) I wouldn't split your job - you can try to protect it all you like but if it's going, it's going and it'll be more stressful.

that's what I'd do anyway.

Go, for all the reasons everyone else says, your gut feeling is usually what it is for a reason.

good luck

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 17/11/2007 19:22

Will your length of service be protected if you do go to this other department?

Were you made redundant and this not be the case you could lose out on redundancy pay.

I would go for it if I were you; but thought the above should be considered/explored further first.

employmentquery · 18/11/2007 16:59

Thanks everyone.
To ChristmasSS, yes and yes...I don't really have anything to lose.
So I'll be telling them I'll go for the new job...I'm glad everyone here thinks I should!
