Job offer but no an offer?

Hello!

I applied for a similar role to what I am in now however, newer role has better career opportunities going forward. I was successful in getting an interview and new potential employer advised there were very impressed but my CV and skills. I have done 4 rounds of interviews. My last meeting was last Wednesday in which the company MD joined meeting. They discussed in fine detail the package and expectations of the role. (The meeting was 1hour 45 mins long). At the end of the meeting the asked that I email them in the coming days to confirm I would be happy to accept the offer which I did. They emailed me back to say thank you for confirming and it was me and one other candidate left and they would be in contact at the start of next week. It is now Thursday and no word. So my questions are is it unusual for a potential job to ask you accept an offer before you even have the job? Also is it a red flag that they have not kept to their word and let me know by the start of the week? I understand something may have come up but surely a holding email out of courtesy should be sent.

Bloody hell, it's cheeky to ask you to accept an offer they aren't willing to actually make yet.

In an ideal world I would have advised you to be a bit more cagey at that stage, along the lines of "those terms sound in line with what I'm looking for but we'd need to discuss at formal offer stage".

At any rate, the situation now is that you haven't got an offer and you're waiting to hear if you do. Stuff comes up so it's not a massive red flag that they didn't get back to you when expected. It happens all the time that (e.g.) a senior decision-maker whose approval is needed is swamped and can't get to it. I would send a polite chaser email, but other than that all you can do is sit tight, and don't agree to anything in future until you have an actual formal offer.

Thanks for the response. Well I finally got the call yesterday afternoon and I have been offered the job. She apologised for the delay in letting me know. I hope I am making the right move but only time will tell.

I wouldn't worry too much, in my experience of recruiting it always takes longer than you think to get formal offers out.
