Confused about contracting

Can anyone help me? Someone in my family wants me to do some work for their limited company, it would be as a ‘contractor’ as an events manager rather than as an employee. Can I set up as self employed to do this? I’m seeing confusing things online about umbrella companies but i don’t think that would be relevant for me. Thank you!

Yes, just register as self-employed and send them invoices, which they pay. You are responsible for your own tax and NI contributions (so take that into account when pricing up your work), and of course you won't get any holiday pay, sick leave etc.

It might also be worth getting them to sign a contract agreeing to your terms and conditions and fees.

Have a read on the HMRC website, there is a lot of information about what constitues self-employed vs employee and what each should entail.

Thank you @dodobookends! Yes I’ve had a look on the hmrc website but Dh suddenly found all this stuff about contractors and IR35 and it was all a bit confusing.

@Dizzywizz You wouldn't be a contractor as such in that way - that term is usually used for workers in the building and construction industry etc.

They would treat you as a business supplier providing a service in the same way they might engage a firm to do an advertising campaign or provide computer support.

Yes that seemed to be the case @dodobookends when I read into it. Thank you for your help!
