Care Home I work in is being closed down Friday

Hello all,

I have been told today that the Care home I work in has been served notice by the local authority and will be closed by Friday.

My role is the Home Asministrator. I have only been in the role 3 months and I was not made aware of the issues the company had at interview. The company has other homes however I have been told that my boss will have to try and find me job, however it will not be in admin.

The issue I had was I got offered another job and handed in my notice last Thursday and they begged me to stay and said it will get better. I turned down the end job and the next day I was told that the care home will be closing and all staff will have jobs in the other homes but I won't. So I was worrying all weekend about not having a job. I called the job that I had been offered but they had given it to someone else. I g into work today and get told this morning I won't lose my job as the home will be sold and won't shut. Then when I finish I get told them home will be closed by Friday.

They have said I could do Care or activities but I have a few issues with this. Will I still get the same wage that I'm currently getting if I take a Care or activities job? Or can I still do the same hours which is mon-fri 8-4pm as I can't do later or weekends due to childcare.

Does anyone have knowledge in employment law. The help would be appreciated as I'm panicking.

Thanks for reading, hope it makes sense.

Hi there
Sorry to hear this - I work doing some HR stuff as part of my role I'm not an expert but I know from experience in he NHS
If they are offering you something else they aren't legally obliged to pay the same money if it is for a different role within the organisation

Eg if you earn £12 an hour as the administrator and they pay care workers £9 an hour they wouldn't inflate your salary - they may "salary protect"
You for an agreed period of Time and keep you on the same money but they aren't legally obliged too unfortunately.

This would be unfair on all the other care workers. We had a situation where they made some secretaries redundant but during consultation told them what else was available and what the salary would be for each job and what band etc...

I would phone ACAS and get some free advice
www.acas.org.uk

Also contact the place you turned down and explain your situation has changed and see what they say

Thank you for your reply. I ajve already called the job I turned down and they have offered it to someone else now.

I will be phoning Acas tomorrow.

They can offer alternatives but not force you to take it. Usually there is a period to try and not lose payout if you decide it is not for you but having been there only a few months that may not apply. What is your notice period? They should pay that plus any accrued holiday.

Oh @Governoress86 that's a shame but keep your eyes out and maybe follow up with an email to say if they have anything similar or the candidate doesn't work out you'd be delighted to be considered in the future etc etc

Yes - contact ACAS they're great

If jobs are slim pickings in your area, I'd take an alternative so I had a job over no job but look for other things too perhaps then at least you're "currently employed" as it were
