I'm a nanny, and my temp job finishes at christmas. I'll be 25 weeks pg on xmas day.
If I remain unemployed until the baby is due (April 8th, but will be induced/cs early as I'm diabetic) then my maternity allowance will have to kick in 11 weeks before the due date. I'd really like to find a job for the first 6 weeks or so of next year, so that I don't 'waste' nearly 3 months of my maternity allowance before the baby is even here. I'm going to call all the nanny agencies this week to tell them my availability but don't hold out much hope of finding a temp nanny job for the correct amount of time. Also, whatever I did would have to allow me to attend weekly diabetic antenatal appts. I don't expect to find something that pays a fortune, just something so that I'll be employed for longer and won't need to start the MA as early.

Can anyone think of anything suitable that I could try or apply for? I'm at a loss!

TIA

Knitter with every sympathy for you I really don't think anyone will take you on pg AND diabetic.(sorry harsh but true!)

That sais 6 weeks might be just the right amount for someone who needs a short-term nanny/maternity nanny?

Could your GP sign you off sick so you can at least get something benefit wise & then go onto MA as late as poss?

Good luck!

Goodness, I don't know what to advise. I am a diabetic, so do understand. Could you be an emergency nanny / night nanny, is that a possibility ?

Thankyou for replying,

The temp nanning route is my only option really isn't it? I don't hold out much hope really of finding anything, I've temped on and off since I moved up north nearly a year ago, and temp jobs are few and far between round here. I had thought about night nannying, but thought I'd need to sleep myself really. But thinking about it again, I'd have all day to sleep wouldn't I?

Thanks again!

bossybritches, I don't think the gp would sigh me off sick as there's not actually anything wrong with me! Plus even if I was on benefits they would all stop 11 weeks before my due date and the maternity allowance would have to start. I'm so frustrated!

What sort of reaction are you getting from the agencies knitter. Are they dismissive ?

KnitterInTheNW · 15/11/2007 11:35

They're not being dismissive, just 'we'll let you know if anything comes in' which is what they always say. Thing is, there's jobs coming in and then the family actually employing me!
