Career change: I want to be a Dietitian

Hoping this is the best forum for this question!

I currently work in a very stable career in HE (not academic) - I've worked my way up over the last few years and have a comfortable middle-management position.

I'm getting really disillusioned with what I do however. I want to really help people while I develop my own knowledge. Over the past few weeks I've been considering applying for a relevant university course but wanted some advice. My degree is English literature, but I have a Biology A-Level which may help me qualify to study Dietetics.

I am 32, and will be TTC in the next 2 years (sorry to be on MN with no kids!) - but I suppose I could defer study if need be. DP has said if this is something I really want to do, we could look at finances and see how things could work. I could ask my current employer if I can be moved to a part-time contract.

Could anyone give me any advice? Is there anything I need to consider? I am a VERY risk averse person, raised to never stray off the beaten track. Considering such a big career change is a very big move for me.

Have just confirmed there are no part-time degrees that are recognised by the registered body :( and that you don't qualify for the grants if you already have done an undergrad degree.

I wish it wasn't so hard to change careers :(

Could you get an adult learning loan instead of a grant?

I'll look into that @ThisIsStartingToBoreMe, thank you

Hi, I have been looking at moving into health care over the last couple of years, and have researched funding etc (I have two children, oh earns enough to support me so would only get non-means tested support). Currently £5000 per year grant. There is another £1000 you can access if you have children (in the future possibly). You can also access the student loan as any normal student can. All these you can qualify for even if you already have a degree

Hiya, for certain healthcare courses (including the one you want to do), you can get student loans even if this is your second degree: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/career-planning/study-and-training/considering-or-university/financial-support-university

You can also get a £5k NHS bursary which you don't have to repay.

Hello, I realise this is an old thread but just wondering how you got on with your career change? Did you got for dietetics in the end? I’m in a similar position now albeit with two children, thinking about changing careers to become a dietitian. Would be great to hear an update :)
