I'm currently a stay at home mum to my 1 year old and planning to return to work in 2023ish (when DS gets funding for nursery). My partner has just said tonight he will happily pay for me to train as something should I want to (up to £5000). Completely my choice for what I train in, I just have absolutely no idea what to train in but would like to take the opportunity. DP is here everyday from around 12pm so I could have full afternoons to train up until 6pmish. So could anyone chuck some ideas my way? Preferably something outdoorsy/animal related but am definitely not opposed to an office based role. I don't have a head for numbers though! Thanks 😊

Hmm, well a lot of outdoorsy and animal based jobs will be more dependent on skills and experience than qualifications per se, so I wonder if a better investment at least at first would be for him to look after your DD in the afternoons while you do some voluntary work in a couple of different fields? Do you have earning expectations as a lot of animal work is really badly paid? A good thing to do when you are ready to start proper employment would be to do an apprenticeship, the salary will be low initially, probably barely enough to cover childcare although you should get some help, this will get you a qualification paid for but more importantly a foot in the door with experience and hopefully lead to a slightly better paid job ultimately. Some ideas of different jobs, I think you can do apprenticeships and/or qualifications in all of these -

-Landscape gardener / regular gardener /arboretist /tree surgeon

-Grounds person at a golf course or football club

-Veterinary nurse

  • Dog groomer/dog therapist

-Assistant at a kennels or doggy day care

-Groom (for horses)

If you want to look more into office based roles, depending on your appetite for academic qualifications, you could consider either just looking at something which will help you get into an administrative type role so maybe MS Office type training, minute taking, that kind of thing. Or do your PRINCE2 qualification and look for junior project manager type roles (although some work experience would probably be useful there too). Or you could look at entry level HR or IT roles, again you will probably need to do some work experience as well but the qualification might be a bonus on your applications?
