Has anyone transitioned from self employment to employment, what references did you provide for employer?

I really appreciate your help. Will volunteering references from recent 3-6 work be accepted?

Did you need to prove self employment?

I'm not sure to be honest, could you get a reference from any of your previous clients?
I presume that with IR35 there will be quite a number of people in a similar situation.

I was asked for my accountants details last time. I didn’t actually have one (I just did the tax myself), but I do now.

So what did you supply at the time they asked for your accountant’s details and was that just a reference from your accountant to say that yes you did hire them? Or did they supply you with a document containing your calculation or earnings?

Me!

I’d been self employed for a long time. I should say however I went into a public sector job and at the bottom.

My references were two friends 🤷🏻‍♀️. It was generic references not specific though.

As for finances, i filled out a New starter checklist from the gov website, ended up paying no tax for first few months of my employment then had to to pay it later on with my self assessment for the end of financial year for self employment.

I just provided accountant details who verified I had been self employed. Nothing else was required.

I worked for an Accountant. Usually references just said how long they had been the clients accountant and that all accounts and tax returns were upto date. Both my husband and son worked together and were self employed. When my son went into a paid job, my husband wrote a reference.

Apologies, I also provided dates of contracts for the time period they were interested in plus the details of the contracting agency.

Does that mean that your references were only character ones unrelated to your self employment?

Yep, they initially wanted one of each, I queried via phone about it and they asked for an extra character reference instead.

Interesting. What kind of job was this for?

Civil service AO position, admin type function. As far as I can recall, it was mostly they needed to confirm how they knew me, how long for, if they knew if i had any previous convictions etc. All tick boxy.

I had a DBS as part of the process as is standard anyway. They honestly weren’t bothered. Once you’re in the civil service you don’t need references to move to other civil service jobs anyway.

I applied for a part-time medical job a few months ago having been out of it for years. Current very part-time job is fairly unrelated (except for working with children). I asked a parent who happens to be a GP, and the head of a course I've been doing for a few years, to provide references. Hopefully I'll be asking them again in a few months time when another post comes up as I've been encouraged to apply again. I'm not planning to give up my self-employed work either.

That’s good. So they didn’t need you to prove self employment, just the character references?

I think so, yes.
