Stay or new job?

What would you do? I like my current role but I’m grossly underpaid. I like my colleagues and it fits well and I’ve worked hard to get my own processes in place to make my job more organised, streamlined and enjoyable. However, I did apply for a new job (another company) which had a pay scale 10k+ increase to my current salary. Didn’t think I would get it, but I have been offered. New job would be good but I’m a bit ‘meh’ about starting all over again somewhere new etc. They have offered me 10k more though ....would you move from a nice, settled job ...for £10k more. I think I probably should as that’s an incredible pay jump....but just keen to hear of experiences of similar or opinions really....thanks

Do you think you could have a frank and honest talk with your current boss? It sounds like you don’t really want to leave but you don’t appreciate being underpaid.

Hi, thanks. I was considering that. It’s going to be a fairly big ask to jump up so much and I think I’m actually scared they’ll say no and that it will really dent my confidence- in that they’ll be saying I’m not worth it. I think I will have that conversation though...

Depends. Are you career driven?

Career development wise it's good to not let yourself become too comfortable. The new role could be good for your development and as they say "no risk, no reward".

The current place doesn't value you, if they did, they'd pay you enough.

What is the percentage increase on your salary is £10k - if you are currently on £20k - it's quite a significant uplift. I think it's best to get comfortable with moving around - not that I encourage movement for its own sake but you should be treated well and you should be paid well and fear of moving often results in people putting up with either and sometimes both.
Dh stayed with his first employer for 16 years - it was hard leaving that security and the road was sometimes a wee bit bumpy but the feeling gained from knowing that you are valued by other companies, hardworking, talented people always are and you can choose to vote with your feet - well that's the sweet smell of freedom and happiness and you will receive the rewards. Good luck!

I would say move! You'll develop new processes etc at the new place. Being underpaid eats into your self confidence.

Thanks - good advice. I think it is slowly denting my self confidence. I had a year of feeling grateful for having a job following mass redundancy (I was lucky to stay but it was dreadful for many of my colleagues). Then I had a year of feeling grateful that I kept my job during lockdown. Now I just feel so underpaid it does get to me. Thanks for your thoughts...useful.
