I’ve been in my current job for 1.5 years. Increasingly l feel spread too thinly due to the amount that’s expected of me in my role. Also I’m managing a team of people but there are vacancies which we are struggling to fill. So the expectation that’s recently emerged from more senior management, is myself (and the other 3 people in my grade / role) cover for these vacancies whilst also doing our own roles. A number of the locations are far from where l live, so some would mean leave the house before 6am, start work at 9am, work until 5pm and then get home late. There would be no extra pay, time in lieu etc. I would then be spread even thinner, l worked super hard through the pandemic with a fair few 10-12 hour days. People in our role at other organisations who deliver the same contract do similar but are paid £15-20k extra per year (sorry to be a bit cryptic but lm trying to not give too much away in case lm recognised!). All of this has got me thinking l can do better. I’ve just been offered a new job but lm not sure whether to accept or not

CURRENT JOB
Full time 4 days a week in office / different work locations and 1 day a week working from home. Meant to be 7.5 hour days (we have been working from home for the past 14 months due to the pandemic)
£41k
26 days holiday a year
Slim chance of progression as there is nowhere to go
Poor maternity deal -barely above statutory
Pension deal isn’t the worst but not great
Good sick pay deal

POTENTIAL NEW JOB
Full time currently 1/3 of time in office / various locations and 2/3 at home. Not sure of plan post-COVID. Maybe could get 1 or 2 a fortnight at home
I could probably negotiate to £42-44k
28 days a year holiday (increases after 5 years and then after 10)
Not sure of progression rate but large employer with fingers in many pies so probably good chances
Good maternity deal
Excellent pension deal (but l would have to pay lots more in, which would wipe out a lot of my pay rise. Employer would also pay lots in)
Ok sick pay deal

I’m conscious the job market is quite tricky at the moment so lm keen not to make a mistake!

The new job seems like the obvious choice to me, especially given the better prospects for progression and how thin you are spread currently. What’s holding you back?

BarryTheChopper · 23/04/2021 19:03

I’d go for the new job.

There are often better progression opportunities working for large companies. Plus, it’s more money, a better pension, better maternity and your current employers are taking the piss.

What is it that’s giving you pause?

EL8888 · 23/04/2021 19:04

@TheUndoingProject fear of out of the frying pan and into the fire mainly. There are lots of other charges in my life at the moment so it would be another big change for me. Plus l should have mentioned the new job is technically more junior but appears to be more money and less hassle. But only technically bearing in mind the salary and job title of current role

I think you need to find out what the plan is post COVID for the new job but agree that sounds better. ( just as an aside .... why are your current employer struggling to fill the vacancies?)

EL8888 · 23/04/2021 19:57

@Divebar2021 good point about the post COVID plan

Recruitment and retention is an issue partly due to why my heads been turned. As their contemporaries at similar organisations often get 25% more pay, more holiday and a better pension. Plus business is booming in my industry, we have expanded during the pandemic and may well expand further. So there’s a fair few roles out there
