Would I get the sack for this ?

Today I made a big error in judgment and wrote on a small work group chat about another colleague. The colleague told me off for talking too loud so I wrote to my friend she’s moody this one . I was only joking , but obviously no excuse . The person isn’t on my team but I think a Manager saw my message before I deleted it .
Will I get the sack for this ? Or a warning? What would you do as a manager . Thanks

I would have thought a warning but are you new in post? Not nice though, think how you would feel if similar were posted about you.

If I was your manager I would probably have a quick chat and ask if you thought it was appropriate behaviour. A minor slap on the wrist (not literally) and move on.

Who was in the group chat? And did you mean you write just to your friend? Hence deleting the message!

Different if it was over work email

I'd have a word with you about acceptable behaviour at work.

First of all you were talking so loudly that a colleague told you to stop - and then your response was to text a bitchy comment about her to someone else.

It's all very immature. You're being paid to do a job.

I'd be keeping an eye on you from now on, to be honest.

Was it a work group chat? Or did a manager see a private message you sent? Either way dont do it again your not 12!

No of course not. But - as someone who has made several email gaffs during her working career - let me give you some advice. NEVER EVER put anything in an email that you wouldn't want other people to read.

It may not be professional but it's not a sackable offence. If asked, explain what you've learned from this that means you won't do it again. Mistakes are things you learn from.

You're unlikely to be sacked.. but..

Workplace is not the place for being bitchy and annoying. If you want to be brash and chat shit about people then go back to the playground.

There is a huge difference between 'joking' and genuinely causing upset towards another colleague.

If you were being so loud to the point someone not on your team felt it necessary to raise it with you then you perhaps need to spend some time considering the impact that you have on others.

A firm word (unless you were already on some kind of behaviour-based PIP), but I'd be rolling my eyes internally. I once walked in on one of my direct reports loudly bitching about me to another woman in the (only) ladies' toilets... she hadn't considered that her female manager might also need a wee at some point Hmm

Also perhaps consider that if someone has asked you (hopefully politely!) to tone it down, then you might actually have been too loud?

We'd remind you that we expect you to give any feedback you have for other staff to them directly - your comment contributed to division between teams and we would find that unacceptable, no matter how funny you think it is. Issues between teams is a pain in the butt!
