New jobs reference & first written warning almost 10 years ago

10 years ago I was working in a role where due to a massive mess up I ended up with a first written warning on my file. I left about a month after receiving the warning for a new job.

I have now been in that role for over 10 years.

I’ve just accepted a job at a new organisation which is a massive step up and I’m so excited about. I’ve obviously had to provide the details of the job where I worked and got the warning as they require employment only references. I’m really nervous it will come back to bite me and the offer will be withdrawn. I know my current role where I’ve been for 10+ years will give a great reference (I’ve never had any issues there).

Can anyone advise?

Usually references only go back 5 years. Plus most companies only provide dates worked and confirmation of job title. It will be fine!

Where I work warnings expire after 6 months too.

Confused?? I really think you're worrying about nothing.

That makes me feel better Smile I’m so happy with the new job offer and just don’t want anything to mess it up!!

You worked there so briefly! Can't you ask reference from the employer before that one? But anyway, 10 years previously... will anyone really pay any attention?

I had a warning once at work too. I was informed at the time it would sit on my file for 6 months and after that destroyed. It was ver6 controversial, I was very insistent at the 6 moth mark that the piece of paper went through the shredder. Warnings are timed, unless it’s gross incompetence which would have likely got you the sack anyway, I’m sure it would be expired and won’t be mentioned, I don’t think they can after a certain time. If you are part of a union, it may be worth just asking the, for advice quickly.

Genuine question to anyone with more clue than me - is there a limit on how long a company can keep your file anyway based on Data protection laws? I feel like there may be a cap, name on file and employment time yes, but actual details?

I think it might be 6-7 years - fingers crossed all will be well!

Most references now are just dates worked and job title. I wouldn’t worry.

They won’t mention a first warning from years ago, don’t worry
