If I want to drop a day at work?

I currently work full time Monday-Friday, but I finish at 3pm on a Friday. My daughter has been going since 10 months old and I would like to have a day at home with her during the week. So I’d like to drop my Friday.

I am paid by salary rather than hourly - so what will happen to my pay? Will they cut it? Will it stay the same?

It’s a small company, the other 3 people in my section work full time too and we’ve received a group email about our salary going up so we’re all on the same amount and it increases each April.
Work are also very flexible and lenient; when I went got the job they were very clear that they will work around me and my childcare ect. (Thankfully we found a local nursery at short notice so childcare isn’t an issue)

I’m just trying to weigh up my options, if I drop my Friday will my pay be affected- then decide from there what to do.

Well if you do less hours then of course you'll get less pay
Your salary would be pro rata

Alternatively you could do same amount of hours but just longer days on the other days so you could have Friday off (if that's possible)

xyzandabc · 13/04/2021 09:24

Of course your pay will be lower. What are full time hours, how many hours do you work now, how many hours would you be doing if you drop Fridays?

User135792468 · 13/04/2021 09:25

So you want to work for one day less and think that they should pay you the same amount? How odd!

They would probably pro rata your salary based on the number of hours you work. Is your 3pm finish on a Friday written into your contract or is this just a perk?

Hoppinggreen · 13/04/2021 09:25

I’m not an expert but I would imagine if you do fewer hours you will get paid less, you will probably get less holiday too.
You will be doing 4/5 of your current hours so should in theory get 4/5 of your salary

vdbfamily · 13/04/2021 09:34

I am on an annual salary but take my annual leave in hours not days. Your company will know your hourly rate.
If you drop a day they will work out how many hours you are contracted for and reduce your salary and annual leave entitlement accordingly.

RonSwansonsChair · 13/04/2021 09:39

It doesn't matter that you're salaried rather than paid by the hour, you will still have an hourly rate (salary/ contracted hours). If you cut back on your hours it will impact your salary, if you change your working week so it's the same no. of hours over 4 days then your salary would remain unchanged.

TokenGinger · 13/04/2021 09:40

You'll receive 80% of your pay because you're working 80% of your hours.

Unless you can apply for compressed hours, working your full time hours over four days, but that becomes four long days.

QforCucumber · 13/04/2021 09:40

If you drop a day but up the hours on the other 4 then you could maybe keep the same salary?

if you drop a day and reduce your working hours then your salary will reduce accordingly

oohmyback · 13/04/2021 09:43

If you drop a day when you work 5 days a week you will lose 20% of your salary.

I can't believe you needed to ask tbh!

starbrightstarlight8888 · 13/04/2021 09:43

Are you talking about adding your Friday hours onto the other 4 days?

idontlikealdi · 13/04/2021 09:46

Of course you drop your salary unless you compress your hours to the four days, what an odd question

Twistered · 13/04/2021 09:46

Yes your salary will be lowered and your annual leave entitlement adjusted and lowered also.

LifesLittleDeciders · 13/04/2021 10:00

Ah that’s what I wanted to know, is if being paid by salary is different to being paid hourly as it seems pretty generic as every month I get X amount regardless of if I’ve been off poorly or finished early ect. It always remains the same so I wasn’t sure if that was the case unless it was a significant amount of hours dropped (will only be 5.5 hours) - It’s in my contract that I finish at 3pm Fridays.

I would up the hours on the other days but there’s no way too, I work from when the phone click on to when they click off, there isn’t room for extended hours unfortunately. Perhaps I will stay full time for the rest of the year then review next year.

If it's in your contact that you finish at 3 your salary on your contact will be based on those amount of hours
You're sick policy would tell you if your pay is affected if you're of sick
Most companies for example would only not pay you for being poorly if it's been a high amount (but then you would be made aware anyway)

MiddleParking · 13/04/2021 10:05

OP Grin if salaried people could drop a day with no impact on our pay I can assure you we’d all do it!

LifesLittleDeciders · 13/04/2021 10:28

@MiddleParking exactly.. I thought I was missing a trick! 😂🙉

I'm guessing this is your first job so maybe not an entirely stupid question but quite sweet that you think a salary means you get paid for time you don't work Smile

LifesLittleDeciders · 13/04/2021 10:36

It’s not my first job, however it is my first job that’s paid differently (always been paid hourly) so to see the same figure on my payslip every month got to a bit confused I think! Blush wouldnt free money be lovely though.. Grin
