Secondment

I have moved to a seconded role within my organisation. It has been mentioned several times that it's a secondment. The rate of pay for the role is lower than what I earn. Will my employer reduce my salary in my next monthly pay?

Sorry but it's another one of those "no-one on here can know what you've agreed with your employer".

Things you need to have negotiated and received in writing -

  1. Effective Start and end dates for the Secondment. Start date will be the date from when any salary change will be effective. End date will be when the secondment finishes and should indicate that you return to your permanent role or an equivalent thereof.
  1. Title of the Secondment role: this is important because you need to know what you'll be doing for the period of the secondment.
  1. Some indication that you will have a permanent role to go back to. A Secondment often includes the proviso that if the permanent role is made redundant in the intervening time, then what the arrangements would be - which could mean they give you suitable alternative vacancies available at that time that you can apply for, or the alternative of a redundancy.
  1. Statement to ensure they agree that you maintain continuity of service through your secondment and onwards from there.

So in answer to your question, you need to ensure you have all the above details squared away before you start the secondment, so that you will know when your adjusted salary will start.

Haven't you had any such discussions with your new manager when the Secondment opportunity was offered?

It really depends on your company policy. Ours guarantee a return to your role (or equivalent) for anything up to a 12 month secondment, the money normally matches your current role (unless secondment role is higher) if you have a company car you can keep it for short term secondments.

No. I applied for it some time ago then training came up for a new group (old and new starters) and I felt obliged to go ahead. Seems to be OK but only now I thought about the pay sit. I havent had new contract or anything. Just a welcome letter. I got a pay rise last year when I gained a relevant qualification and dont want to lose it.
The company is going through a TUPEd situation in September. There hasnt been much discussion about the secondment.

It is unlikely you will receive a new contract.

What is more likely is that you'll receive a letter to confirm the conditions of the Secondment and the information I've listed above.

If I were you I would gain clarity in writing on your employment situation surrounding your secondment, especially with the TUPE hanging over you in Sept.

You should have clarified whether your pay would be protected before accepting the secondment. You’ll need to speak to your line manager or HR and say you have not yet had confirmation of the terms of your secondment and request it.
