Work is horrific, don't know what to do.

I started a job a few months ago that as per offer letter was meant to be marketing. It's turned out to be customer service...sitting at front desk, answering phone, dealing with tiny stock and delivery problems. Work I specifically said in the interview I did not want to do. I was also recently asked to spend two hours every morning counting and sorting bricks. I struggle so much with keeping a happy face on with customers and dealing with a million small things at once. I just can't do it. It's been a massive step down in terms of responsibility and opportunity but I felt I had to say yes and then stay past months trial due to covid situation. I've previously worked in marketing for a global organisation, exceeding all objectives, won scholarships to study abroad etc. And now I spend my days counting bricks....

It's an environment where they have cctv pointing at computer screens, sack people for asking to work from home, have twice sent people they know have covid into our office, always moan when anyone takes holiday, change hours at the last minute (more hours, no extra pay) and regularly accuse staff of stealing (they don't of course). Massively understaffed too with staff turnover like nothing I've ever seen. (20 new staff over 4 years in 4 person business!) Owners are convinced everyone must multi task all the time.

I'm struggling to find anything else right now, especially as my cv is starting to look so bitty due to a family move then covid. I feel sick with worry about it all and don't know what to do. Any miracle ideas? Can't really go off sick as no sick pay. Would probably be sacked for asking to go part time but wondering if it's worth trying.

Stop fretting and go.

Sounds crap, the staff turnover is a big red flag too. You're well within your rights to take the donut and run. I'd start pitching for freelance /work out your studies schedule, confirm your notice period and hand in your notice

Get out now. I've left a crap job for similar reasons and I explained why in subsequent interviews. You are showing confidence and decisiveness.

If you stay and have to explain your role to subsequent employers qnd it's mainly about counting bricks, that's not going to support your marketing ambitions.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 06/04/2021 19:25

I think it’s fair to say to subsequent interviewers “the job was not as described”

^^ This.

As an aside, interviewers are all too eager to find out why candidates left their previous jobs, but I've often wondered how they would respond if the tables were turned and they were asked why the previous employee had left?

Thanks so much all. That's really helped me see that a few shorter term jobs might not be the end of the world. I have one course deadline this Friday then a bit more free time to concentrate on job hunt and sorting out other work to pick up. Then it will be goodbye from me!

I had to pick up the phone to customers 35 times yesterday...this is a bit sad but I worked out that that is once every 13 minutes. (never mind customers actually coming in face to face and e-mails!) When research suggests it takes 23 minutes to get back into a task after being interrupted I can see why my brain is fried trying to do the marketing as well!

@ProfessionalWeirdo Yes I think a company should have to show its staff turnover just like an employee has to show their previous history!

I didn't last the month I said I would! Notice handed in today woohoo. Director came down to interview a Yard person and say that yesterday's interviewees were no good. She twice said 'well one was Indian.' Then proceeded to shout at my v experienced colleague for something she hasn't actually got wrong. Came down again later and continued shouting and I said I was uncomfortable with her comments about being Indian and I'm actually part Indian myself. You'd never guess looking at me but I'm not far off having the surname Parr. Presume they wouldn't have employed me if they'd known. She then proceeded to continue shouting at everyone and stormed out. And I wrote my resignation offering one week or one month as there's a bit of ambiguity due to them never confirming end of probation. Then I left. And I feel good...nah nah nah nah....

Great update well done!!

Good luck with the next bit - it will all work out in the end.

Well done! Also well done for speaking out about the racism, even if it won’t make a difference to her. Good luck with your new jobs.
