My only child is going to uni in sept and i have decided to take the plunge and go work abroad , was prev a contractor now IR35 has come in and deciding to close my limited company and fancy a change.

I will be leaving in 6 months and as my contract just ended i'm on a job hunt . As i want to rent my flat out whilst im gone i need to get a BTL mortgage but been advised to get a perm job.

Morally i find this bad as i already know ill be leaving after 6 months or am i being silly ? I'd just feel guilty about taking a role im not going to stay in .

Depends - if it’s a job at a massive company where they train up people all the time then fine. But a small family business - probably not

Get the permanent job and plan your life based around your needs.

Be the star in your own life story.

Yeh tak the job. Maybe you will love it and stay!?

palapenojopper · 03/04/2021 08:10

You have to make decisions like this sometimes in life 🤷‍♀️ get the job and leave after 6 months. They will then hire someone else. It'll be fine.

As long as it's not for my small family business where we spend ages trying to recruit the right people for the long term as it's an expensive process then go ahead.

Take the job, you're replaceable at work as they say, a mild work inconvenience for a recruiting manager pales in significance to your actual life, plus you never know what's going to happen in life and you may need to stay longer.

Where will your child live during the holidays?

Worthingmumofone · 03/04/2021 10:48

He will come out to me or stay at his dads who will be in the UK

Id just feel guilty but yes i guess people dont stay forever in jobs these days and companies have no issue with cutting staff when needed.

Do you have any contacts from contracting?
You might find they will give you a permanent contract even if you can only work for 6 months and you're honest about it - we'd consider it if we knew your work quality, we had the demand and we didn't have to invest in training you.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/04/2021 10:54

Take the job. You never know how things pan out and you might need it for longer.

How long would the probation and notice period be?

memberofthewedding · 04/04/2021 20:38

Do what is best for you and your own career needs. The days of mutual respect and a social contract between employees and employers is long gone. Big companies (especially) will use you and let you go at their convenience. So long as you do a good job and earn your pay you have no reason to reproach yourself.

Worthingmumofone · 04/04/2021 21:39

Yes sad but true as a contractor ive seen perms working for the company for years get cut without a second thought these days if they can save a dime.

I've been made redundant from 'permanent' roles four times in 20 years - companies have zero loyalty to employees so I feel no need to be loyal to them. Take the perm job.
