Hi, I need to return to work after children at the age of 39 but want to change from childcare. I'm looking into HR careers or data analyst work so would love to hear about your experiences working in these fields. Any tips of how to get started? I have a year to go before my youngest can start in childcare so can spend some time self learning at home before possibly doing a part time course to get going. I figured I have 25 years or so of working left in me so may aswell retrain and try to progress in something else than work school hours for minimum wage and feel unsatisfied.
Any tips would be appreciated

What area of HR appeals to you most OP as the entry routes can vary depending on what you’re planning on doing. What is your background and skills? HR is such a broad sector so it’s difficult to advise without more details!

If it helps, stated with a strong admin background and worked as an admin in recruiting to start with, understanding some of the basic principles. Then that experience helped me move to a HR Admin job before moving to HR Assistant. I wanted to work in ER or as a generalist so worked to get my L3 and then L5 CIPD qualifications while gaining experience and shadowing the advisors I worked with before moving into an advisory role. I went on to specialise in ER for a few years and now I’m a HR Business Partner and work more strategically with the business rather than case work and oversee and collaborate with recruitment and L&D etc. I’ve worked in HR for around 10 years.

Hi @Glittermonkey I returned to work after children as a data analyst. The initial pay was low, but I had the most amazing team with lovely people and could move on to a better paid job with a similarly amazing team. Be warned though it took a while to find the first job and recruitment agencies didn't want to hear about me due to my career break and no experience in the field on paper.

What the recruitment agencies never recognised was that I had a lot of transferable experience working with large datasets, using statistics etc.

Thank you, this is my concern that it will be hard to take on a job with no experience.. But it's another avenue to explore

They're very different fields, narrow your choice to one and focus on that. I have no idea about data analysis it you will be looking at qualifications for HR
