Hi guys,

I used to work in various fields from HR to sales to administration in the Middle East.

However I got married and moved to London and I have been here for 11 years.

I became a homemaker and wasn’t working, I have decided that I need a new career.
I’m 43 and I don’t have any experience in Europe.

I would like to start somewhere, and looking into courses and a new career path. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated. I’m bilingual in both English and Arabic and I’m hoping that would come in handy as well

You could probably make some decent money being an interpreter.?

SoddingWeddings · 25/03/2021 12:09

Civil Service jobs website - the FCO might be especially interested in language skills, but otherwise LOADS of options to peruse. Stable work, permanent positions or temp roles and good pension.

Thanks guys, I need a work from home, and I’m willing to study to do this... any insight?

I’ve been unemployed for 10+ years

I think language line interpreters work from home....not sure if you need qualifications or not

here

SoddingWeddings · 26/03/2021 09:08

Much of the civil service are working from home on a long term basis due to covid, and lots of jobs are permanently WFH as well.

That said, you'll always need to start at a job with training, familiarisation etc, so you might need to be in an office etc for that period.

Why do you have to WFH?

Fallingbythedozens · 26/03/2021 15:35

Because I have 3 children, and I need a flexible job i case of relocation to another country as my husband is interviewing for that.

That’s is why I am asking to take up courses and start a new career

Relocating to which country? Working from home doesn’t mean you can work anywhere in the world as there are tax implications. Within the UK, though, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Fallingbythedozens · 27/03/2021 11:34

Working from home in a non government job, Means you can work anywhere.. like graphic design as everyone has been doing.

As for taxes, until I work and if I’m still in the uk I’ll pay it.

I would Like the courses to start in your career.. So I’m seeking recommendations for career path and courses

Right, so you want a job where you can WFH while looking after 3 children, in any country in the world? I think that's quite unrealistic.

Fallingbythedozens · 27/03/2021 11:53

@wonkycactus how I manage will be up to me.. for now I’m asking for guidance and options please have something constructive to say...

idontlikealdi · 27/03/2021 11:55

I'm with @WonkyCactus not sure you're going to find anything. If your husband is actively interviewing it all seems a bit of a waste of time.

HollowTalk · 27/03/2021 11:57

Could you become a freelance translator, where you translate business documents?

Greenhamster22 · 27/03/2021 11:57

NHS language line pays incredibly well, I’m not sure how they advertise vacancies but look into that the money is incredible.

Timmytoo · 27/03/2021 12:02

There are many career choices that will fit in with your lifestyle. You'd be best working for yourself. Ideas:

Interpreting documents
Web Developer
HR consultancy
Bookkeeping
Career advisor
Online English teacher
Social media content coordinator
Content writer
HR blogger with affiliates

Will think of more

Timmytoo · 27/03/2021 12:09

Another thing that you could do is find a couple of suppliers of interest. You could set up a online shop, woocommerce is free. When customers place an order, you notify the supplier and they dispatch directly to the customer using your business details. You are able to make a profit without having a shop or buying stock in advance. If you move, you could still keep the same business abd suppliers.

GothamGirl1970 · 27/03/2021 12:17

How about Spotify? You could do the closed captioned lyrics in other languages and they allow any employee to work anywhere. All over the news

Fallingbythedozens · 28/03/2021 10:09

@Timmytoo

Thank you so much!! I like these options and that is the kind of advice I was looking for... is there a website/courses I can take? I don’t mind paying.. if you prefer to DM 🙂

@GothamGirl1970 will have a look

@Greenhamster22 will have a look but do I need to a certified translator/interpreter

@HollowTalk I’m good but I think you need to be certified.. will have a look at that

@idontlikealdi I believe we all need encouragement.. scrolling instagram is a waste of time, me wanting to learn / Start a new career regardless of what happens with my husband, isn’t.. to each their own
