Dangerous colleague

I'm so upset so please don't judge me, a colleague who is also a good friend puts patients in danger and has absolutely no common sense at all.
I tried to just guide them the first few times but now they have done something I can't ignore not learning at all from our previous discussions. I had to report them.
I just didn't know what else to do because after weeks of training they are still putting people at high risk and someone will eventually die.
I said I've reported them, I've owned it and I think the friendship is over.
Is there anything else I could have done, I honestly don't think I would change my actions looking back.

Why would anyone judge? You’ve done the right thing- patient safety is top of the priority list

I admire you. It must have been difficult but honestly, if you’d spoken to them and tried to guide them and they still hadn’t modified their practice, what else could you do?
You have probably saved at least one person’s life.

WakeUpSchmakeUp · 21/03/2021 15:38

If someone had died and there had been an investigation and you were questioned and found to be aware of bad practice, you would be in a whole world of trouble.

That is the right thing to do, were management aware they were under performing and putting patients at risk. Who did you report them to, have they been spoken to by senior staff. If you witnessed unsafe care you have a responsibility to report it, dont beat yourself up about this, it will be investigated and managed by the appropriate staff.

All areas of the health & social care sector need people like you. Look at the Francis report, too many people close ranks & role model unprofessional behaviour. The CQC also find the same themes over and over.

You have potentially saved a patient from negligence & your organisation from reputational harm.

Done the right thing.
I had to report a much loved friend and colleague once. Not a life or death but a serious breach all the same. The friendship survived as they understood.

Thanks everyone I am much reassured I did try and help her over and over and spoke to her manager before doing this but at the end of the day patient safety is more important to me than a friendship. It's just a horrible thing to have to do.

In some jobs sloppiness and incompetence is annoying. In others it endangers lives. Even if you are trying your very best, if you aren't good enough, someone has to stop you.

Thank you for being brave enough to report I know it’s won’t have been easy x
