I think I'm about to leave another job ( and one I love) because of a poor manager. Maybe as I get older I'm just less comfortable about putting up with crap. I'm fed up with being treated badly by jumped up young managers with little life experience and no moral compass. Anyone else feel the same or have I just been unlucky with the past couple of jobs?

I’m also about to leave a job because of a poor manager. In this case by “poor” I mean competitive micromanager who hates other women whom she perceives to be more successful than her.

In my case I’m not particularly fond of the job but I would have stayed for another year if it wasn’t for her, as I’ve made a good reputation and I can do it well.

Poor managers are poison, but as you get older it’s inevitable that you’ll have managers younger then you that you’ll think are wet behind the ears. Unless they are really toxic, I think you can subtly mentor them though and help them be better managers. Of course sometimes it isn’t worth trying (like with my manager).

People management is usually an enormous surprise to those who are new to it - it’s a lot harder than they assume and consequently a lot of managers end up ignoring their responsibilities and doing the bare minimum, resulting in unhappy staff who leave.

I have a high performing team of 7 at the moment working in a very, very stressful and pressured environment and their pastoral care can easily take up my whole working week because I prefer to be the kind of manager who is available and supportive and I genuinely care about their well-being. They consider me to be a rare and wonderful beast.

Sorry to hear you are in a similar position. You sound like you are the kind of manager I would like to have. I have tried so hard to raise concerns that affect vulnerable people on a daily basis but he does nothing. Everything he seems to do is about covering his own back and feathering his own nest. I'm so done with it all.

I don't think it would matter how old he was if he was competent. i perhaps shouldn't have mentioned age. It's just that in 35 year of working the worst managers have been young !

There is concerned about employing an older person to be managed by a younger inexperienced manager - a manager has to cut their teeth at some time...I know we should not discriminate when recruiting on age but when you fear the candidate themselves might be likely to discriminate on age (I've seen older people on here say the same as you) - it doesn't make for an easy decision.
