...WWYD in this situation, if the second role is your preferred option?

How long until the interview? If it's this week then drag it out, and tell them at interview that you're sitting on an offer. If it's longer you either need to do the dirty, or be brave.

Take your time and make a decision based on the 2 if you get another offer?

SozzledSausage · 17/03/2021 22:10

I ended up turning down the first job because they wanted to me to confirm a start date. I didn't get the other job.

Can you accept the first job? When is the interview for the other one?

MegBusset · 17/03/2021 22:11

So is it OK to tell the first job that I have another interview coming up? Or is there another way of stalling for time? I'd be delighted with either role (just that job 2 has more favourable conditions) so don't want to risk pissing off job A in case I either don't get job B or decide after interview that it's not for me.

No! Don't tell them you have another interview!!

If you want to stall it needs to be something like 'thank you very much, can I take a few days to consider everything and get back to you by x?' but tbh you need to be pretty confident that job 2 will be letting you know sharpish - you don't want job 1 getting fed up and withdrawing the offer and then you don't get offered job 2.

What are the timings between needing to give your answer and having the 2nd interview? I'd say string out making the decision if you can (could you blame Covid?) but otherwise if they push you, accept the first job but don't be afraid to turn it down if you're offered the 2nd.

As wrong as it may feel to be dishonest/ let people down, you need to put yourself first in this situation as the companies wouldn't hesitate to let you go, even after the offer if they no longer needed you.

Congrats on the offer and good luck with the interview.

Definitely don't tell them you have another interview as they could rescind them offer and offer it to their 2nd choice candidate.

I think it's fine to stall for a few days, maybe up to a week or two. You can say you need time to think about it. And you can ask lots of questions about terms and conditions that might take some time to sort out.
