Please tell me some realistic jobs/professions that meet the following criteria! Do any exist?! Currently going crazy in my boring, sedentary job (in a profession that has very few opportunities). Have researched alternatives but I keep going round in circles! Any (realistic...) ideas welcome Grin

  • Not 100% computer-based
  • Involves helping others, even just in a small way; or at least making a valuable contribution to a useful organisation
  • Good mix of team work and independent work
  • Not teaching, retail or nursing
  • Pays £25-30k minimum...

SallyMcNally · 17/03/2021 19:17

Check out university admin jobs. Some are very computer based but depending on what you do it is usually quite varied and interesting with lots of contact with different sorts of people and generally decent hours, good pension etc.

slowbumper · 17/03/2021 19:34

I second adult social care finance roles.

FawnDrench · 17/03/2021 19:45

yeOldeTrout · 17/03/2021 19:48

Events planner (ok not many of those jobs right now)

All kinds of fund raising. PA to a charity exec, Quango CEO, hospital consultant, professor or someone senior in local govt.

I would recomend it.

Good work life balance*, you get extra shift pay, great pension, colleagues are usually okay.

*As long as you dont mind doing shift work.

Plant Inspector? My MIL does this and has a lovely time driving about looking for plant diseases and some desk work. Big demand with brexit. Starting pay just makes the grade. The APHA is the government agency.

I work in homelessness prevention. I am at the lowest of your required pay. It's very rewarding but also challenging.

Violentfairy · 17/03/2021 21:55

You could also look at mental health support work, ambulance staff, OT, family support worker. What about working with asylum seekers or young mums?

EmmaC78 · 17/03/2021 21:55

How much time/money do you have to re-train or are you looking for something you can change to straight away?

FizzyPink · 17/03/2021 21:55

What skills/experience do you have OP? Any qualifications you could use in an alternative career?

MaraScottie · 17/03/2021 21:57

Web Accessibility/Digital Accessibility consultant.

I am in digital accessibility and love it. So much opportunity now in the area. Very interesting, slightly technical but also very much based around user experience design and being the voice and advocate for people with disabilities. Check out the IAAP for entry level certifications.

Violentfairy · 17/03/2021 22:00
