I am employed, and currently job searching for a role that is more suited to me and my career path.

I have been filling out application forms over the last few weeks, but I haven't sent a single one off, due to them wanting a reference from my current employer! They will also request the references prior to interview, which makes this situation even more difficult.

As I'm sure you can understand, I don't feel comfortable providing them with a reference from my current employer. It could put my job in jeopardy at worst, and make things very awkward at best.

What do I do? I really want this role, but I just can't face the idea of them contacting my employer who doesn't know I'm searching...

In my industry it’s common to either use your last but one employer or alternatively only give contact details once you have a job offer (so at that point you hand in your notice and they send the reference request). Ring them and ask their preference - it’s a very common problem.

@FudgeSundae Thank you for your reply.

The application form itself requires me to list the references on it, so I have to put down the details in the application. Ringing them to ask about this particular issue is a good idea. I think it is due to the nature of the role that they request references prior to interview.

If someone does not put down their current employer as a reference, then that would set every alarm bell in the place ringing! We (and many others) would never accept an application if the current employer (or most recent) were not a reference. Although we do allow people to stipulate not to take up references unless an offer is made.

That said - moving to new employment is not exactly unheard of, so why would your employer think twice about you doing this, and why would it put your job in jeopardy? I write references frequently and my only sadness is when people leave because they are so good at what they do, but I know it is time for them to move on.

@Moondust001

Thank you. I understand why a reference from my current employer is required, I'm just uncomfortable with them contacting them before I am interviewed. It would be a different matter if they didn't contact them until an offer had been made, as I could then tell my current employer myself.

We contact an employer for a reference after we have offered a person the job - the offer is subject to reference and background checks. No way would we put someone in the position of speaking to their referees before interview - I’m surprised they get many applicants.
