How long do you give before deciding whether a job is for you or not?

I've just started a new job this week and I don't think it's for me. It's in a different sector than what I am used to and the role is different to what I'm used to (I originally was offered a different role but the company withdrew the offer due to staffing changes so they offered me another role in the company). I had been out of work for 9 months so I accepted the role. Granted, I haven't actually started training on the role yet (that will start next week) but I've been in back to back meetings for the whole week pretty much meeting people and sitting in other meetings and I'm feeling really overwhelmed as I've never had to be in many meetings in my previous roles. The people are absolutely lovely but I'm not feeling myself at all and I haven't felt like this in a long time.

From what I'm understanding about the role, I don't think it will be for me. I've decided to give it a couple of months and see how I feel but how long do you normally give it before deciding whether you want to stay at a job or not?

6 months before I have ever felt “at home” in a job! But in practice (and an ideal world) I’d give it a year because I would want to avoid shorter jobs on my CV. Hope things improve for you. Sounds more like you’re just new and a bit in shock rather than you don’t like it for what it’s worth!

6-12 months sounds like a decent amount of time but I'm not sure if I'll last that long with the way I'm feeling at the moment. But I think you could be right about me being in a bit of shock as I guess I wasn't expecting things to be as intense as this week has been

I'm in a similar position and though I'm sure things will improve I'm thinking if it doesn't I'll do a year then look for something else. I'm trying to think of it as a challenge to overcome at the moment and think about the learning opportunities
