Needs to be during school hours, or late evenings, term-time only(!), and obviously well paid!!! (well,ok then, paid)
Am stuggling for inspiration, have been looking for part time jobs in schools (need to be back to pick my own up).
Our after school care is full so thats no help either, and have no family around to muck in.
I like the idea of shop jobs, but they are never term time only.
Am I ever going to find anything, or just searching in vain for something that doesn't exist?

I starting selling Usborne books when my 2 started school

I can do what I like when I like, school hols are not a problem, nor is school pick ups

I dont do all that much but I have friends who do really well out of Usborne

let me know if you want more info

Not sure if thats the kind of think you are thinkinging of, but it is very hard to get a job where you can be around for the school hols.

can be a classroom assistant if qualified, but even then , unless it was at your childs school, you woudlnt be able to pick them up

There were adverts for dinner ladies in our paper, not much money though as it is only 8 hrs a week but fits around school

Im sure others will come along with a few more ideas

anniebear · 06/11/2007 14:36

do none of the bigger supermarkets work around school hours?

anniebear · 06/11/2007 14:38

do you like ironing?!!!!!!!

could provide an ironing service

silversparkler · 06/11/2007 14:47

How do usbourne make money when there are such cheap alternatives such as book people? I do love books. Love crafting, but thats not a money spinner.
Detest ironing, am really rubbish at it, could never charge anyone!!
Can do a decent job cleaning, has anyone gone it alone on the cleaning front?
Regards the supermarkets, am too fat to fit in uniforms!!!!!!!
Am still looking for school jobs too.
Any other ideas?
Thanks so far!

Years ago my mum advertised in The Lady magazine as a cleaning lady, she put something along the lines of - trustworthy, likes dogs blah blah and she got loads of responses from rich people happy to pay a little more for someone good.

Hamandcheese · 06/11/2007 21:06

Cleaning - just go for it! My cleaner (who is fab) offers term-time only, then when she can do occasional sessions in the school hols she contacts her 'best' clients to offer to them. she works on her own.

presumably you're not a qualified teacher?
further / higher ed teaching?
open university tutor?
teaching 'craft' courses? Someone I know recently got job teaching somehting crafty at a day centre for adults with special needs

teaching those endless pre-school activity franchises: music (jo jingles etc), gym (tumble tots...), tots craft stuff ...; baby signing / massage / yoga ...
franchise owners often looking for people to employ to teach classes regularly

silversparkler · 06/11/2007 21:16

I am (shame faced) a qualified primary teacher, but don't want to teach at the moment, my children are too young (altho all at school) for me to put my heart and soul into teaching again. My life is non-stop come 3.15!
Thanks for the ideas so far. How much do cleaners charge???

I have started as an agent with Tish tash Toys (www.tishtashtoys.com),all toys for 0-5, lovely wooden and educational things,am really loving it and especially this time of year making quite a bit of extra money!
hope this helps

silversparkler · 06/11/2007 21:43

aukjepaukje that sounds v interesting, have emailed them for more info, thankyou!
Do you mainly do 'parties' at home, other's houses or at playgroups?

cleaning, about £6.50ph cash in hand round here. Ironing the same.

Monkey music / jo jingles franchisees pay about £8ph round here for people to take their classes - but you would need to sing.

My mother retired from teaching and was asked to do some local authority tutoring for children who are out of school (illness / exclusion, not sure). Would that be possible / not too awful?

work in a preschool / playgroup (pay minimum wage here but much less stressful than school teaching - typically 2.5 to 3 hrs per day). I know a couple of qual teachers working in preschools.

TA / LSA work?

Hi Silversparkler, have you thought of doing Home care? if you apply as a "bank" worker you can get to choose which hours you want to work.
It can be quite flexible as well.

Hiya, I've recently started as a community carer for a local agency and am really enjoying it. If you have a car you can make average 7quid an hour (lost my poundsign ) and name your hours, more on weekends and bank hols. It's surprisingly good fun as long as you're not too squeamish - most mums aren't I think . I work about half the time out on my own and the rest doubling up with other carers for clients that need lifting etc so I get some peace and quiet as well as colleagues to chat to.
I work Sundays from 7am and have booked myself in to work loads over the Xmas hols while DH is off.

If you are worried about the competition Usborne gets from The Book People, what about Phoenix cards which has a similar set-up to Usborne.

I don't know if you can earn a lot but you can chose your hours and do as little or as much as you want.
