Working in beauty from home (new mum)

Hi everyone

I'm a new mum to a 7 month old baby boy. When I met my partner I was between office jobs, and then fell pregnant so I haven't got a job - I'm a full time stay at home mum (which I love)

I've been studying interior architecture as a future career when my baby is old enough and he is in school, however this job can be very high pressured and stressful and I've been thinking a lot about doing certain beauty therapy treatments from home (post covid) as something I enjoy doing that will bring me in a little extra cash, give me more financial independence from my husband and will give me most importantly flexibility around my baby.

I'm a huge advocate for natural beauty and natural beauty treatments and I was thinking of incorporating this into what I'd do from home...offering natural facials, eyebrow/lash treatments as well as other treatments.

My main question really is, are there any other mums out there that do this part time around their baby? I'm really looking for flexibility/ a little cash to call my own around looking after my son. (If I love it I'd carry on pursuing it rather than interior architecture)

Is it hard to gain clients?
How do you overcome the fear of treating your first client?
How did you get started?

Thankyou so much! Please be kind!

Lucy x

When you say If I love it I'd carry on pursuing it rather than interior architecture do you mean you don’t currently have any beauty training at the moment? Sorry if I’ve misunderstood, but I’m just wondering, if you don’t have any training at the moment, what the insurance situation would be?

I have a close friend who does this. Her children are now 3, 7 and 8. She started doing it in her kitchen, but last year got a really nice “shed” thing in the garden... it’s difficult to describe but it’s lovely and very well decorated. She’s built a good local reputation so gets pretty regular clients from referrals, and does pretty well.

How will you make appointments around your DS? Do you mean in the evenings? This kind of work tends to be unsociable hours, so you need to be prepared to work evenings and weekends.

How to get clients completely depends where you live, social media is a cheap place to start.

Surely you are training so are practising on people? If you are really fearful perhaps this isn't the right profession for you.

How to start? Get training, insurance, market research on what people want, decide on treatments to offer, buy in stock, advertise, set up room at home, tell mortgage company or landlord about running a business from home, register with local authority, register with any other bodies, buy beauty therapist out fit, think of a good name for company, tell everyone you know and get them in for a special price to start the ball rolling, tell your neighbours.

It really depends on your location how lucrative this could be for you.
