change in structure - where do I stand?

Hi all, I'd like to have your opinion on the situation I find myself in:
The company I have been working for 10 years is undergoing structural change, to the better actually I think at least. Processes will change which also impact my workflow and I am involved in these projects but another department will take on parts of what we do in my team. I have already had conversations with my line manager expressing my wish to move on to new opportunities within the company of which he is very understanding and supportive (that's my impression at least). He said he also wants me to be able to grow in the company so that both get the most out of it. I feel now underutilised and he thinks I can add more to the group in a different role. He is having conversations with senior management. Some changed in different departments have been announced internally, none around ours. The new structure should - so I think be more clear to my manager at least - so I just wonder why being kept waiting. We finished our annual appraisal process and for good order I wrote that I'd like to have a conversation how and in what new role I could add more value. Been in my current role 5 years, previous role also 5 years with them. On the appraisal form he wrote that "we will address the concerns of ... professional growth". Just as a note on the side, colleagues changing roles is quite common, incl. myself. What is your perception of the situation I am in? Where do I stand do you think? Is there a future or should I assume the worst for now? Many thanks!!

It's awful being in limbo while awaiting the outcome of a restructure. It's good that you've discussed your development plans with your manager, but there's not a great deal you can do until your personal outcome is delivered. What your manager has said is very positive but it would do no harm to research other options both internally and externally as it's always sensible to have a plan B.

Hope it goes well for you.

Restructured generally take ages, I don’t think it’s a bad sign.

What is the usual practice in your company for internal vacancy-filling and job moves?

Where I work people are not usually ‘slotted in’ to roles. Most roles are advertised, internally or wider.

If you’re sure that a number of others have been given job moves (without roles being advertised) and you would like this, or to have the opportunities to apply for roles, you could request this in writing (eg email) and seek information on timescales.
