Help negotiate an offer

New job offered 1k above my salary, which is actually 2k below the range role was advertised for.
I'll be fine with 2k more i.e. the lower end advertised. How do I negotiate to get at least this?

Do they know your current salary?

How big was the range advertised?

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 24/02/2021 08:25

Explain to them why you should get the advertised amount. Don't settle for less than that! Ask them what they think you can't do that merits paying you less for then if they come up with something, argue it clearly.

Yes they do know my salary @palavah. It was a 3k range but the lower end would have been 3k more than I currently earn which I was fine with.
I don't have the upper end of the years of experience required @WishingHopingThinkingPraying

So you earn 20, the range is 23-26 and they’ve offered you 21? Cheeky gits!

I’d email back and say, “I think there’s been a mistake...”

I'd say "Thanks for the offer. I applied for the job based on the advertised remuneration of £X-£Y. In light of my experience, demonstrated at interview, £Z is a fair salary. Is the salary something we could look to negotiate on?"

X is lowest, Y is highest, Z is somewhere in between. I'd try to push for the top end, but you don't say how experienced you are at the job, some jobs I've gone for and I've asked for a little below the top range if I'm inexperienced but I've never asked for the minimum.

Yep!

Research shows that women don’t negotiate their salaries. Ask for £1k below the top of the range and then that gives the room to negotiate. Trust us! Smile

I'd actually say ' "Thanks for the offer. I applied for the job based on the advertised remuneration of £X-£Y. In light of my experience, demonstrated at interview, my expectation is of an offer in that range'.

Next time don't tell them your current salary, just your expectation.

Thanks all!! Went for the middle and got the lower end, which I'm fine with.
