14 hour shift

Is it legal to do a 14 hour shift and the next day a 12 hour shift does anyone know? Start times for both is 8am so not much sleep between shifts.

It depends on the job, intensity and rest of the contract. Some doctors have oncall requirements of 48h (though there is an expectation of some sleep in there somewhere) in one go.

Think it depends on the job, normally you need 11 hours 'down' between shifts.

It's a support worker role for disabled adults.

Check with your award- is it two 'waking' shifts? What's the start and end time? Were you made aware when you took the job that it would be these hours? I (think) the minimum break between shifts, without having to get an allowance/ overtime is 11 hours- UK has a higher number than a fair few other countries. If you have to go back to work less than 11 hours later- you are I believe supposed to get overtime rates until it's been 11 hours. If it's care work- call the care commission or union to ask.

OK Thankyou I will ask as I'm in today. Definitely not waking hours as I can't do them

Sounds like my old job- I’m an RN for reference. My old work actually got pulled up on it as they never gave us proper lunch breaks either (we had to eat at our desk between patients). They had an audit one year and got in big trouble. They then forced us to take breaks.

Pretty certain you have to have something like a minimum rest period of eight hours or thereabouts

That's not a lot of time esp if you have a decent commute etc

Racoonworld · 18/02/2021 09:12

Think the minimum rest period between shifts is 11 hours. Does your 14 hour shift end at 10pm then the next shift starts at 8am? If so that’s not allowed as there isn’t 11 hours between the shifts.

Under working time regulations you are entitled to an 11 hour break. If this is not possible due to unplanned circumstances/emergency then you are entitled to compensatory rest ASAP.

Ideally you should be permitted to start work at 9 the next day rather than 8.

Is this a one off
