Tattoo's

Hi

Looking for recruiters thoughts on tattoos?

I'm in a fairly professional job, looking to work my way up over time.

I already have a few, which can all be covered so are no issue, I'd like to end up with around 60-70% of my body done over time.

Would this be an issue for you if I was right for the job?

I have tattoos on both my wrists and my PA has a full sleeve plus one on the back of her neck, she also has an undercut. I am fairly senior in a traditional industry, no-one has ever batted an eyelid about them. As long as they aren't offensive I really can't see the issue!

I'd be less concerned about the tattoos than about the apostrophe in the title of the thread - but depends on what's involved in doing the job, I suppose.

Tippexy · 09/02/2021 19:37

It would depend on what the role involved

user22222 · 09/02/2021 20:45

Thank you all for your replies, it's good to see it is becoming more acceptable!

I work in procurement within a local authority, and have never noticed any tattoos, although there are probably plenty under clothes!

There's always one snarky comment isn't there😁

Just don't have Fuck Off on your knuckles before you go for your dream job interview and you'll be fine Grin

Our role is professional and public facing. It shouldn't matter - but it would. Tattoos project a certain imagery that isn't positive when used that extensively. It isn't the small well placed (even visible) tattoo or tattoos - it is the 60 - 70% you are suggesting. I'm afraid someone presenting in that way at interview would face a disadvantage of their own making, yes.

Iheartmysmart · 09/02/2021 22:07

Blimey, I’ve got visible tattoos, multiple piercings and brightly coloured cropped hair and I work in a fairly conservative field. Would hate to work anywhere where you have to look like a corporate robot.

PresentingPercy · 09/02/2021 22:48

Procurement in local government is not really public facing though is it? It was not in my day. Some local councils don’t care too much what behind the scenes employees look like. They probably have an employee tattoo policy!

Yellowfiledredfilled · 10/02/2021 08:33

I don't think we'd care if you had the skills to do the job - but we work in an industry with a skills shortage. We might ask you to cover it up initially with a new client but if you were shit hot at your job (being funny helps too) the client wouldn't care - people are very open minded when it comes to talent. If you are mediocre at your job though - they are much less forgiving.

Tatoos are fashionable now, like beards on men. Beards can be shaved off.

Yellowfiledredfilled · 10/02/2021 09:00

One of my friends was reminding me that when she worked for PriceWaterhouse - a beard was a mark down at interview. None of them wear ties anymore either - even at interview!

RaspberryCoulis · 10/02/2021 09:08

If when you're wearing a shirt none can be seen then not an issue.

Tattoos on the face / neck / hands very much are an issue.

Lulu1919 · 10/02/2021 09:19

Depends on the work place
In my school they are to be covered
Although one teacher has a small ankle tattoo and you can see it in the summer if she's in sandals

W00t · 10/02/2021 09:29

My school is exactly the same Lulu1919.
We also are not allowed non-natural coloured hair, (by which I mean one can dye it black or Auburn but not pink or blue) or 'extreme' hairstyles either.

user22222 · 10/02/2021 12:19

It seems it depends on the company really doesn't it.

I'd love neck/face and hands but am aware of the judgement I will receive, and potential employment knock backs, so am toning it down to 70/80% 😁

Not so much public facing, but client facing, and in normal non-Covid times, residents and external professionals would see me in and around the office.
