Had to let an employee go

For total underperformance.

I tried EVERYTHING to help them do their job properly. Six months of training, mentoring - NADA-.

When we broke the news they just shrugged their shoulders and said ok then.

This is the worst bit about being self employed!!!

Rant over.

Before anybody asks - yes there was a clear set of KPIs + success criteria. These were reviewed monthly - with documented improvement plans for areas of concern.

I've sacked many people. They all deserved it.

GADDay · 01/02/2021 01:46

@Aquamarine1029 it is my first one.

I feel guilty. Even though it was 200% deserved.

Dont feel guilty, op. Like you, I did everything I could to support them and give them training needed to do their job successfully. They couldn't be arsed.

12frogsincoats · 01/02/2021 02:02

Don't feel guilty! Sounds like they didn't value the job at all. Instead you can offer it to someone who really will value it. So see it as a good thing!

GADDay · 01/02/2021 02:11

Thank you 🙏!!

I keep thinking - but how will they pay their bills. Clearly they were not too worried.

Back to the drawing board!

I've done this. It sucks but it's for the best.

It sounds like you have more than one employee? If so remember that you have responsibilities towards the others (and yourself!) to ensure that the don't get dragged down by others, and that your business continues to thrive so they can pay their bills.

Thanks - that is a great perspective.

I agree - you have a duty to your other employees to run a successful business. From what you've said it's sound like yo did the right thing. To feel bad is human though and be grateful you feel that way...when you stop feeling bad about sacking someone on a human level - worry then about what you have turned into.

GADDay · 01/02/2021 09:16

I feel so flat. I had so much energy and belief in building an awesome team.

We have a flexible wfh policy (not Covid related).
We give our staff a full home office setup - state of the art - laptop, dual monitors etc.
We offer excellent benefits /leave etc.
Bags of training all paid for.
Phone, company parking for client visits & company credit card.

Not worth a shit when somebody just does not care. I need to learn better hiring & screening techniques.

Bahhhh! Would it be easier to get a job.

I had to do this, wasn't hired by me but I ended up managing him. Spent loads of time helping him, training him. He did fuck all. Was glad to be rid of him and so we're all the other people who work for me. I saw it as part of my role to keep my brilliant staff happy. The other one brought it on himself.

Volcanoexplorer · 01/02/2021 11:00

I’m sure it’s a horrible thing to have to do, but it seems you were left with little alternative after all of the support you put in place. People can’t expect to be paid for doing virtually nothing. Maybe they’ll learn from it and try harder in their next job.

Dogonahottinroof · 01/02/2021 13:38

How did you sack someone who was self employed?

She’s self employed Her employee wasn’t

So .. Importantly are you hiring?

If so, where are you based? Is it work from home based?

I'm very well versed in KPI targets and meeting targets.

GADDay · 02/02/2021 05:29

@loopyapp we are hiring - but we live on the East Coast of Australia and f2f with clients is required.

Thanks anyway 😊
