Turning down a job after accepting

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has any advice on turning down a job after verbally accepting and how I could word it.

I was leaving my current job, and my new job told me to not hand in my notice until my relevant checks, dbs check & contract came back. In that time the new employer contacted my current boss for a reference when he didn't even know I was leaving. Que very awkward conversation but we did have a good chat and I agreed to stay as he offered a payrise & we ironed out the reasons I was leaning anyway.

Aside from that I'm totally annoyed that my new employer did that too me and when I asked why they did they they told me they'd advised for me to hand in my notice. Which they didn't as I hadn't got a start date yet due to checks & I don't want to work for a company like that.

What should I say in the email?

Thank you!!!

Just say that after further consideration you’ve have decided to decline the job offer

Do you want to stay for a company that didn't value enough until they thought you may be leaving? Most people who get a pay rise to stop them leaving end up leaving any way as the reasons for them leaving never really go away.

Also how can they give you a contract without getting references first?

@Bixs answer is short and simple, professional and polite. YY as @ramblingsonthego says it is very possible that despite the good chat you have had with your current boss as a result of this episode, you may find going forward that the problems haven't really gone away - but that's a future bridge to cross.

@ramblingsonthego yes I agree the problems may still be there so I don't know if I will stay forever & I will still keep looking but I don't want to take the new job after this whole thing. I dunno my gut feeling is telling me not too after they denied what they originally told me.

They were not going to offer you the job unconditionally without checking your references, so although it was safe not to officially give your notice, if course you should have told your boss to expect a reference request.
