Has anyone else been offered a job where they don't offer any training?

I've been offered a job (in sales) but have been told they don't do any training for new staff and that staff are expected (in their words) to hit the ground running!

Whenever I've been offered sales jobs before there has been an initial training period covering product knowledge and other essentials.

Is 'no training' typical for companies these days or should I avoid?

I’ve never worked in sales, but that definitely seems odd. Maybe they just mean there won’t be any sales training and that you are expected to already have that skill. They’ll surely still have to give you some kind of induction to the systems, products, etc

You should probably just ask them before you accept I think, so you know what you’re going into

Nope, no product training or training on how to use their system. I'll literally get issued with a password and login and link to the computer system. It's home based so no colleagues to ask either.

How are you supposed to sell something you know nothing about?
You should get a minimum of a week on the market/product competitors etc and if it’s very technical it should be longer
I have been in Sales for a long time so very experienced and I would expect any professional company to offer training

Every bloody job.
And I'm in technical sales.

Any company who fails to invest in on-boarding new staff with training in their systems is worth avoiding like the plague.

Think what it will be like 3 months down the line, if you make a mistake because they've never bothered to support you, and you having to think what to tell your next employer as to why you've left. "I was never given any training, I was having to work remotely and they sacked me for not being able to do my job".

Don't even go there, set yourself up for success, not failure.

We give our staff induction training, in their first week, some online mandatory modules to do, then additional training with team colleagues. It show it can be done.

seems very odd. I'd do further research on the company before undertaking anything.

What will you be selling? It seems very odd not to provide any product knowledge, systems induction but the amount should probably depend on whether you are selling e.g. a complex HR software package or scented candles! Is this a well-known company? Do you know much about them, their staff turnover (which sounds like it will be high!), any reviews on Glassdoor?

PaperMonster · 06/02/2021 21:48

Our place is like that - and we’re a training provider!

VeganCow · 07/02/2021 15:19

So, you start on day one, log into the system, take the first call and... what? How do you know who to transfer people to if you need to go higher up, find info etc? In other words how can you actually do your job?!

sneakysnoopysniper · 08/02/2021 21:46

Hmmmm. As other posters have stated this sounds very irregular. I have done zero hours work where we were at least given a few hours training (market research) on the phone and computer system to make sure we knew how to log in and the basic company procedures.
