How do you work full time with more than one?

What childcare do you use and does it work? Does it matter if a childminder picks your child up from school every day?
I'm interested to see how others do it.

I don't work at all at the moment, but my frinds who do manage it by either having a dh who works from home who can do pick-ups and drop-offs, or putting the children in the type of private schools which have breakfast clubs and after-school clubs, so they are there from 8am till 6pm.

Lostmykeys · 30/10/2007 18:03

I use a nursery for my two. My local primary which DD will be starting next year offers a before and after club and it's not private. I will use this. Its doable but knackering

dooley1 · 30/10/2007 18:05

The only people I know who work full time and have school age children use grandparents for school pick ups.
The others who use nurseries and childminders have pre school children.

pointydog · 30/10/2007 18:10

Yes, it's ok if childminder picks up the kids from school every day.

My dc go to a meeting point and meet the childminder there.

pointydog · 30/10/2007 18:11

and I know full timers who use the AFter School club (which is also a breakfast club)

ajj · 04/11/2007 07:08

I am a childminder and I have a few children whom I collect monday to friday.

ExplosiveScienceT · 04/11/2007 07:17

I have five children and use an aupair.

WideWebWitch · 04/11/2007 08:26

I have 2 children
1 goes to breakfast club and after school club
the other is at nursery ft

dh does drop off and collecting.

dooley1 · 04/11/2007 08:28

how late do your after school clubs finish?
ours are around 4.30pm or 5pm which is useless when work finishes at 5pm or 5.30pm!

WideWebWitch · 04/11/2007 08:30

After school starts at 7.30am and ends at 6pm
nursery opens at 8am and closes at 6pm

mandymac · 04/11/2007 08:48

very interesting thread. Does anyone know what a CM typically charges for doing drop offs or pick ups and an hour or so's care?

ExplosiveScienceT · 04/11/2007 09:00

Around here (NW Surrey), it's about £4.50 per hour per child.

Kiwinyc · 06/11/2007 15:37

Don't know about Childminders but my daughters Breakfast Club is open at 8am and After School Club is from 3.30-6pm (Central London)

USAUKMum · 06/11/2007 16:31

I have 2 DC my childminder takes DD to school every morning (she charges £4.50 an hr), takes DS to pre-school and picksup. On 4 days I finish at 2:30 so do the pick-ups then childminder does the other day. DH drops off at 8am. From Jan childminder will take DS to nursery at DD school and pickup (luckily her DS is in the same nursery class).

Our breakfast club is 8am - 9am and after school club is until 6pm.

USAUKMum · 06/11/2007 16:31

BTW I only work a 4 day week, but spread over 5 days -- so I can do pick-ups.

Judy1234 · 06/11/2007 17:27

Yes, with 5. Alqways have. For the first 10 years we had the same day nanny who looked after them at home and did nursery school and school runs with the older ones. She lived in her own house and married and had three children in that period before she left.

It was better for us because it's cheaper to do that with a lot of children as you don't pay per child. It also meant if they were off school with a cold or whatever the nanny was still here and did not affect our work and also we had someone for school holidays in due course.

MyChemicalToilet · 06/11/2007 18:07

Pre-school, 2 dds went to a nursery attached to my ex-h work.

We now drop both at school in the am on our way to work. Our childminder picks youngest up from primary school in the pm, and eldest (just started secondary) walks to her house in the pm. She charges £4.50 per hour, provides a snack for them and works til 6pm.

She, my girls, my dp and I are all very close friends now, which helps when issues at school crop up which dds may talk about with her, (she then privately primes us with the information) or we need some unscheduled childcare help in the holidays, or even if we are running a few minutes late for pickup (I am very careful not to take liberties with her working hours).

She is virtually one of the family, which is good if, like me, you don't have family nearby to help out.

charlieandlola · 06/11/2007 18:16

I work a 4 day week, spread over 5 days, so I can leave work at 3 to get dd from school at 3.30. Ds stays in afterschool care until 4.30. In the holidays I use play schemes. Used to have a nanny when they were younger, but now pointless with dd in reception full time.

chocolatekimmy · 09/11/2007 23:53

I have three

6 year old does breakfast club 3 days a week then afterschool or childminder 4 days a week. Other times my Dad drops off or collects.

Two younger ones go to nursery 4 days a week and my mum has them one day a week.

I usually do the nursery drop, husband does the school drop off and mainly he collects all of them (from the 2 locations) after work.

Works ok, couldn't do it without the joint effort. Batch cook and freeze so have the meals fairly sorted too which helps
