do you sometimes take cakes or treats into work to share with your colleagues?

in my old department we would do this a lot - nearly always after people have travelled they would bring back something tasty and send an email round for people to help themselves. as a non/rare traveller I would sometimes bring in something home made and seasonal - I've taken in Christmas cake before and after doing some berry picking took in a summer pudding. nice, I think to take in something traditional - so many of my colleagues aren;t English and we get lots of treats from abroad, so I like to share tasty English treats. I've recently changed departments and I've noticed they never do this. unperturbed I made some bonfire toffee and took it in this morning. It's been virtually untouched and of a dept of 30 odd people only 2 have even acknowledged its presence is it just me or are they miserable buggers? I don;t expect praise - but I just think it's a nice excuse to pop by someone's desk, have a quick chat....or maybe it's just me...(or perhaps I've offended people who aren't keen on the idea of bonfires, burning guys etc...?)

We only take in cakes when it our birthday!

Tommy · 29/10/2007 22:22

they are miserable buggers

In every place I've worked and I've taken in cakes and stuff (love baking but there was only me at home!) it was always much appreciated

What a bunch of ungrateful gits! Think it's a lovely thing to do. Maybe they are all on diets?

Dinosaur · 29/10/2007 22:23

It's very common to do this where I work - it's obligatory to do it if it's your birthday, and most people also bring back some comestibles from their holidays too.

Did you send an email around or something, letting people know it was there? Or publicise its existence in some other way? I'm not sure I would recognise bonfire toffee if I saw it - do you think they knew what it was?

Carbonel · 29/10/2007 22:25

where do you work can i come and have some, i love toffee

My old place it was just cakes on birthdays but ehre it is definitley open house, and I have never known stuff stay uneaten. As yu say it is a good opportunity to chat

pinkteddy · 29/10/2007 22:32

We always do this at work, people bring in all sorts, fruit from garden, biscuits/sweets from holiday - always with sign saying 'please help yourself!'. Don't necessarily expect thanks - its good enough that it all gets eaten! Can't understand why they haven't eaten yours - maybe they are shy?!

hatwoman · 29/10/2007 22:39

I think they are scared of it! I sent an email round and left it on a cabinet near my desk. but it does look a bit odd - all black and sticky - but very lovely(imho ) if no-one takes any tomorrow I'll move it to the kitchen that we share with another dept and leave a note.

I have always been a bit dubious about people bringing in home-made stuff since reading that Deniss Nilson used to take curries made of his human victims into the jobcentre where he worked.

hatwoman · 29/10/2007 22:46

I guess home-made black pudding's not such a good idea then?

Maybe they all secretly wear dentures and are scared their nshers are going to be hurled across the office with a price o toffee attached when they answer the phone

Time for me to go to bed. The tiredness is showing!

unknownrebelbang · 29/10/2007 23:26

We do this occasionally.

Nothing lasts! We've even split a mars bar three ways this morning, lol.

Marina · 29/10/2007 23:38

They are all miserable (denture-wearing?) ingrates hatwoman.
We will make a party out of a packet of Wotsits and the first anniversary of the arrival of a colleague's dd's gerbil in our department, send the toffee round to ours

Tortington · 29/10/2007 23:42

i often buy and present a fruit platter and or cakes - ithink you work with miseries

twentypence · 29/10/2007 23:48

I think you work with people with fillings and who can't find an NHS dentist! Or they are miserable, or maybe both.

Toffee sounds lovely BTW.

I often get a big box of cookies from asda on the way to work to share with my staff, amazing what they will do for a cookie , but seriously it gives me an excuse to get around all the staff and check up chat with them. In exchange I get tablet, snadwiches, biscuits etc etc. Some groups of staff are better than others though.

If it is not normally done they might not feel comfortable helping themselves, some people bring in big batches to sell (we have tablet sellers) so they might have wondered if they had to chip in for it to cover costs of making.

oops check up was meant to be check up , not funny now.
