Non-flaky reasons to give for wanting to change jobs so soon (interview coming up)

I have an interview coming up soon and expect they might ask why I'm looking to leave current role when it's only been about 3 months approximately.
The truth is, I accepted that role in a hurry, was desperate as previous place was closing down and would have been facing redundancy. The located of current job wasn't ideal, it's a lot of messing around to get there any back (I can't afford a car atm).
My reasons for wanting to leave are the location (no car, too far on public transport, travel expense, unreliable buses in the area where I live - rural Devon). The hours of the job I'm being interviewed for will fit better with my work life balance too.
However, I don't want to give these reasons at interview as they sound flaky and selfish, like I only want the job because it's easier to get there and reduces my travelling costs.
It's still within the NHS, but a different area of work. Obviously don't want them thinking I'm flaky or likely to leave them too after just a few months.
Looking for plausible, concrete reasons to say looking to leave current place so soon. Nothing wrong with the role or job, just really awkward location in the middle of nowhere. I took that job as it was the only one available when I was facing redundancy.

I would be honest. You took this job because you needed one in a hurry. Now you have time to look for a job that you really want.

I would focus more on the role you are interviewing for if this question arises - so would answer something along the line of - I think this is a good opportunity due to xyz..

Employers don’t tend to ask why you’re leaving your current job; they're most likely to ask why you want the new one.

BettyAndVeronica · 16/01/2021 22:46

I think the location / travelling to work issues are perfectly valid.

I'd certainly understand that as an employer. Though it would help if you could state that the journey to this job is fine for you and there'd be no problems getting there etc.

I think it is quite like you would be asked about why you are leaving current job. I think it is reasonable to state you took the other job because you need to work and we are in the middle of a pandemic. I would also think it reasonable to state that you want a better commute. I’d probably hold my tongue on “ better work life balance” as some recruiters could misconstrue as you thinking this is an easier job you will coast along in and most recruiters won’t like that.

I had a similar quandary in my last interview as I’d only been in my then current job for 9 months. They never actually asked me but I brought it up. I said I wanted to leave because of the commute. And pointed out my previous employment had been for 12 years. I got the job.

Horseradish01 · 17/01/2021 09:43

I disagree and wouldn’t say it’s the commute as it will come across as if you didn’t give enough basic consideration to the original job before you accepted. They’ll be thinking what if you do that in this one about something else?

I would think of some positives in the new role and say that you’re changing so soon because you couldn’t turn down the opportunity to learn more in XXX or XXX fits more with your overall career goals etc. Then you could add on that the commute would also be much more convenient (so multiple benefits for this job change).

Good luck.

I'd just link your decision to Covid. Don't over explain.

I think you can refer to the unreliability of the bus service. You should have done your research about the route, understood how long it was going to take and gave consideration to how inconvenient it was going to be - but you wouldn't have been expected to know how unreliable the bus service was going to be...
