About to start new job, but have an interview for dream job

I accepted a position in the civil service late last year, having been unemployed since the summer. It wasn’t really what I wanted but I thought it better to accept given the state of things at the moment. It’s due to start in the next few weeks.

As luck would have it, a really interesting job came up that would really make use of my skills but also take me in the direction I want to go, and I’ve now been offered an interview. Obviously there’s no guarantee I’ll get it, but if I do, I would want to accept it. I would feel very guilty towards the original employer and don’t want to leave them in the lurch, although it was a big recruitment drive and they will have reserve lists.

Is this really poor form? I can’t help thinking that an employer would have no hesitation in withdrawing the offer at short notice if they needed to, so it works both ways, but equally I don’t want to screw up my chances of working for them in the future.

Any thoughts? It may all be moot anyway if the second company choose someone else!

If you're currently in the civil service job go for the dream job! No-one will think any less of you and they will soon find a replacement.

partyatthepalace · 14/01/2021 23:03

Do what’s best for you.

These things happen, anyone would do the same.

LimitIsUp · 14/01/2021 23:27

I agree with the others - do what's best for you

Yep, this is so true.

Thanks very much everyone, I feel a bit less guilty after what you’ve all said.

@ArnoldBee I haven’t yet started the CS job but have passed all the checks and they’re setting up remote working, equipment etc. I think the chances of me getting the other job are low but you never know!

Why would you feel guilty? It’s just a job!

Hoppinggreen · 15/01/2021 12:40

You might make somebody on the a Reserve list very happy, look at it like that

Notsogoodhousekeeping · 15/01/2021 15:55

@WalrusWife

Why would you feel guilty? It’s just a job!
I know - I must have been a devout Catholic in a past life. I suppose I feel guilty about letting them down, and I don't want to screw up my chances of getting a job with the same department in the future.

@Hoppinggreen that's a good way of looking at it!

@Notsogoodhousekeeping any updates with the interview?

wendyleen · 03/02/2021 21:41

How did you get on, Op?

This happened to me recently. Accepted Job A then Job B came up. Strung A along for as long as I could but ended up turning it down as I really wanted B and had an interview. I didn't get Job B. Now looking for something else.....

QueenPenny · 03/02/2021 21:54

I have never heard of employers (in my industry anyway) withdraw written offers so that's where your guilt probably comes in.

However this happens all the time as you cant time the recruitment processes of different employers. It's a bigger impact on your life whereas the employer will simply move on without missing a heartbeat to someone else. Also if you join and it doesnt work out anyway it's worse for both you and the employer...

Notsogoodhousekeeping · 03/02/2021 22:19

I didn’t get it, which was a shame, but the Civil Service job is proving really interesting so I’m quite happy to see how it goes. Thanks for checking in!

@wendyleen that’s a nightmare, the timing with my situation gave me a bit more leeway. I hope you find something soon!

Sometimes you have to take a risk!

Glad to hear the new job is working out well. CS is probably a good place to be at the moment.
