Hi all, I'm 21 and in my last year of nursing. I qualify this September. I'm posting here as I thought this would be a good place to ask for advice, my parents don't really know about these things as we're in council housing.
I want to get a flat ASAP after securing a job, but I've heard that I need an employer reference and things like that? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time in the job to prove stable income etc?
Very confused about it all Sad

I'm a landlord and would usually ask for 3 months' payslips or bank statements

Your reference can be from someone you work for you during your training, before you are fully qualified or from someone else professional who knows you well - character reference

In my uni holidays I used to work for a referencing firm and have since managed estates with hundreds of let houses.

If you go through a letting agent that uses a referencing company they will just want to see a copy of your contract and confirmation from HR. It won’t be a personal reference from HR. I’d you’ve rented before we’d get a landlord reference but it wasn’t a worry if not.

Best thing to do if you see a house you like call up the letting agents and ask them what information they’ll need.

Thank you both for the information! So all is not lost, and I potentially won’t have to wait 3 blooming months to leave home?? 😁

Yes, there are proven ways you can use to qualify for an apartment such as maintaining good credit, having co-signers, and showing unusual income.

Last time I rented was via an agency and they wanted 3 months bank statements and confirmation from my employer of my job and salary (plus ID documents, and a reference from previous landlord). Previously I had always rented direct from a landlord and never been asked for anything other than ID for right to rent checks.

The employer reference just confirms your job (temporary, permanent) and salary. No need to wait. You know you'll need 2 months rent - one month rent in advance plus deposit of up to 5 weeks rent?

It's been few years but last time I got a letter from my future employer confirming role and salary. People often need to move to an area for work, so not unheard of.
