"why do you want this job"? best answer when truth is you need a job?

Just that basically? What's the best answer to give?

Also, one of the roles I am being interviewed for is education related and they want me to discuss how I would develop and deliver learning online. What strategies I would use, what platforms I would use. I'm a bit stuck for ideas beyond the predictable Zoom/Teams/Skype etc.

Think saying honestly I need a job and want to work shows you're direct and speak your mind. The platforms my kids teachers have been using are Seesaw and google classroom.

"I began job hunting because my current role is being made redundant /I wanted to return to the workforce after a period out, and this role particularly appealed because..."

Good luck!

If there is literally nothing that you find appealing other than the pay, maybe look elsewhere. Presumably there's something about the job that you find interesting or know you are good at?

So if education related then " I love learning and am highly motivated by sharing what I learn with others", or "I am passionate about helping others to learn and find it rewarding", or "I am success driven and like to see others succeed as a result of my support". Or even "this is an area I know and understand so it's where my strengths lie". It doesn't need to be massively specific, but does need to show that you want to do their job rather than seeing it as a chore or a bad alternative to what you really want to do.

In terms of online, I think it's key to remember that you can't lift and shift onto online, you need to adapt - I would focus there, rather than getting into technical details. So how you would use whatever platform they use, rather than details about platforms they don't have access to...

"Why do you want the job?"
It matches my skillset really closely. Ive got experience of XXX and this would suit the role and help support the company with XXX."

Develop/deliver training online:
Maybe as well as the technical details of what platform you'd use, mention some of the drawbacks of online learning & how you'd overcome them. E.g. Some of the learners might find it difficult to engage online, so I'd make the learning interactive by doing X. I'd include break out sessions to allow collaboration between people on the course.
Making sure your answer covers inclusion is probably a good idea too. Being proactive about including strategies to help people where English isn't a first language, people who don't feel comfortable in certain scenarios, making sure content is relevant to everyone, allowing for different learning styles etc.

When it comes to the online learning question... google is your friend here.
Just google 'tips for teaching over zoom' or similar, there will be loads of articles with suggestions. What you want is ways you would engage people/keep them interested, not literally what platform you would use to deliver it.

I’d say give an answer that links this role to your past experience and your future ambitions... they want to know you want THIS job, and will be motivated to do it well and stay long enough for the return on training you up ..

Re delivering online - my approach is I’d stick with the platforms people know, maybe discuss pros & cons of these 3 to show you are familiar, and talk about users’ experience of them.. (so same as PP lordemsworth)

  • so different experience/confidence with technology
  • how to make t interactive/engaging
  • how you would measure success

Also think about what do you like about the company culture/size/location/brand/ reputation/opportunity for growth/company ethos/strategy/ethics - people talent on the website/ you'll be working with.

If you can't say anything about the role, other than 'I need a job' then perhaps say something about the company, you feel their values align with yours, or you're really excited to see that they are working on such and such project, etc. Something that shows you did some research.
