Civil service HR query

Azif · 29/12/2020 12:13

6 months ago I left a civil service department to work at another government department.
I have been working from home since the move and I can’t take it any longer. I feel isolated and my physical and mental health have suffered.
I don’t want to wfh and I have been told it will continue for the foreseeable future.
Does anyone know if I’d be able to transfer somewhere else I’ll be able to work in an office and not wfh?
I don’t know what my options are and can’t face opening my work laptop to find out.
Thank you

Your Line Manager should provide you with suitable options.
Guidance is to work from home where possible, but it’s recognised that circumstances differ and it can suit individuals to be in the office for numerous reasons.

Your LM should accommodate you, and if not then it can be raised up the chain, to HR and / or welfare.

If the answer is a change of job/department then you can apply for another job or seek a managed move.

The message in my department has been consistent - come to the office only if you must for critical business needs, work from home otherwise. Accommopanied by ‘unless your personal needs differ’
The level of stressing ‘don’t come in office’ has varied, but ‘unless personal needs’ has remained the same.

Think we might work in the same place @Azif...

I had an email stating no office working until 14th jan, but I will be speaking to my c2 when I return about going into the office 2 days a week (until my base moves in the spring)...

I seem to remember 3 c's were mentioned to allow working in the office...collaborate, concentrate (I can't remember the 3rd!)

@Azif

I don’t know what my options are and can’t face opening my work laptop to find out.

Said kindly, you need to discuss this with your Line Manager who you report to day to day - I work in the same Govt Dept as you and they really are extremely supportive of people in your position - sticking your head in the sand will only make matters worse. Trust me on this, they will help but need you to "help yourself".

Your LM is accountable for ensuring your well-being and if you aren't giving them the opportunity to put steps in place to help and support you, it won't make things any better.

I have spoken to my line manager, repeatedly. It’s like I’m banging my head up a wall. I have told him repeatedly and all I’ve been allowed up until now is one day a week. Now I’m not going to get that.

Did your LM give you any reason why they can't accommodate your request?

Have you tried submitting your request as a flexible working arrangement with a business case which can strengthen your request?

If your manager is not accommodating your request I would raise with HR and confirm policy on working in the office. You may also find your facilities team who are responsible for health and safety may be able to help. Try to do this over the phone and follow up with an email confirming their advice.
If you are a trade union member you may find they are able to support you.
If this doesn't work then make a formal request for flexible working setting out the business benefits e.g reducing physical impact of not having proper workstation at home (DSE), and also how you will manage safe working - look at health and safety guidance and state how you will adhere to it.
