Can I be made to attend meetings on my day off?

My employer (school) has a staff meeting every week which is part of our directed time. They change the day of this meeting every half term. One of the days they use is my day off (I work 4 days). I am supposed to attend 4 out of 5 meetings to fulfil my directed time obligations.

My employer is putting pressure on me to attend the meetings that occur on my days off. Can they do this?

Depends what it says in your contract. Often you'd be required to work other days on occasion (and may or may not be allowed an alternative day off instead).

Yes, they can ask you to do 4/5 meetings if that's what you're contracted to do.

They can also change your days with notice.

Also, your 80% doesn't need to be 4 full days.

Contact the union

If you're a teacher then no, you cannot be made to attend a meeting or inset on your day off. After all you could be working in another school on that day! I suggest that you contact your union or HR for back up. If you're not in a teaching role I'm not sure, but again HR will be able to advise you

Thank you for the replies. Yes I am a teacher. I’ve contacted my union now.

Paragraph 5.1.9 is your friend. No, as a teacher you can’t be required to work on your days off as you could technically be employed elsewhere at that time.

If you look at the number of meetings you attend over a year, if only attending on days you work, do you attend 80% of meetings? I guess it would only be less than that if your non working day was used twice in a year.

It actually isn't as simple as the response above

As a part time teacher you need to be provided with your own individual pro rate schedule of 1265 hours. This needs to eb be reviewed annually.

That will specify how your time is allocated.
