Interview Ghosting

I had an interview on 9th December, it went so well. We talked about me starting the following week pending references. Gave all the details for these and have heard nothing from the guy since last Monday (14th).

After a few days of hand wringing, I tried calling, left message on mobile vm and heard nothing. Emailed last Thursday asking if he'd managed to get the references - again, nothing. Called yesterday - VM again.

What's happening? If he's gone with someone else or the references were naff I at least deserve to know right?

What should I do? I need this job, it's close to home (I have children), the money is good and I've been unemployed since September when I was made redundant. I'm so confused.

It can you are the second choice candidate and they are waiting to confirm the first choice has accepted the position before letting you know.

I get that but would a short email saying they are still considering their options hurt?

This seems to be annoyingly common now I've had the same - positive interview, promise to be in touch following week and then.....nothing, no response to calls or emails and that was 3 months ago. I've obviously written it off now but really annoyed me that someone couldn't sent a one line email telling me it wasn't going to happen instead of just ignoring me until I eventually gave up.

Like the previous poster said it could be that they've offered it to someone else and are waiting for a decision or could be that they're just disorganised and slow, especially around this time of year with lots of people on leave. If you're keen on the job I wouldn't give up yet but it's not a good sign for how they communicate.

Dp works contracts. He gets this a lot. It's mean and disgusting but it's a very British thing ( kinda like the British love of outsourcing lol)

It's happened to me a few times. Bearing in mind I work in HR, so get interviewed by the actual HR team, theres really no excuse (not that it's ok for anyone, but sometimes it's hiring managers not HR causing this).

It's an awful way to treat people.

EddieBananas · 23/12/2020 09:06

Extremely common.

I would assume that you haven't got the job. Yes, it close and convenient but would you really want to work for someone who behaves like this? Alarm bells are ringing already!

Metabigot · 27/12/2020 11:23

I always think the hiring managers must be on some sort of power trip to do this.
I mean, they cant be unaware that someone is waiting to find out surely?

I remember years ago going to an interview, getting a call offering me the job and asking me to come in on a certain day to sign the contract. I handed in my notice in the job I was in, arrived to the new job to find they had employed someone else in the 48 hours between offering me the job and signing. Some places are desperate to deal with.

I still haven't heard, but you're right, I would definitely not want to work for a company who find this kind of thing acceptable.

I’ve just had an offer after being made redundant at the end of April. The treatment of me as a candidate by several apparently reputable organisations has been diabolical and I know it’s commonplace as I have regular meetings with a group of people in the same situation. Rejection when all criteria are met, then the role is re-advertised, sometimes multiple times; poor or no feedback after interviews; I was ghosted after third interview stage, which when I reflect amounted to three hours of free consultancy. It’s disgusting. I wasn’t that bothered if rejected by the ATS, although sometimes it seemed inexplicable, but I think when someone picks up the phone to speak to you they’re probably down to 10 candidates and they can definitely give feedback. After formal interview it’s absolutely unacceptable not to contact with constructive and meaningful feedback. I’ll get down off my soapbox now 😀

My DH had this a couple of years ago. They actually offered him the job on the spot and said they would send over the contract by the end of the week. They were an international company setting up an office in London. He called a week later - they said they were interviewing for other roles and would send out all the contracts at once.

Ok, another week goes by and another call and another week.

Never heard from them....

He went on to get a better paid job at a more prestigious firm anyway
