Do you always know if you got the job?

Had an interview recently for a job that I really want. This was the final interview after a long long process
Trying to read into it to see if I got it. HR said they'd let me know in the new year.

Start of the interview the interviewer was clearly in a bit of a huff, and said it was due to her kids playing up.
When she asked a question, I would get half way through answering and she would ask a follow up. So I felt like I only got half of my points out. She never smiled when I was answering, but always followed up to what I said in agreement.

I was given a case file and had to discuss it. It was meant to be challenging, but I think I dealt with it ok.

By the end of the interview, she seemed much happier. Had a bit of small talk and then she said "I hope that maybe we'll talk soon" ??? Is that good or bad?

I had an interview recently by telephone, it seemed to go really well. At the end of the call she said, if I don’t speak to you again and I really hope I do.... best of luck.

I didn’t get it, so I guess things can go any way

I don't think you can know really

I've been offered jobs a few time and been quite surprised. They have siad in these instances I interviewed really well. But I wasn't sure I did! So there's lots still to hop for op.

We ask our candidates challenging questions, we give them an industry document to review - we want to find out how they think on the spot (they will have to in the job) - whether they can ask for more information, further explanation and then hope they can offer ideas and opinions - it might not feel comfortable and they won't have a prepared answer but it's very revealing. I'd hope we wouldn't speak to a strong candidate differently at the end, than a weak candidate - we make a real effort to be consistent.

You can never tell.

Sometimes a candidate does a brilliant interview, but someone else was a fraction better.

Agree with PP. You can have an amazing interview but someone does slightly better. I've had interviews that I thought went awful, only to be offered the job.

Similarly, I had an interview a while a go that I spent alot of time and effort prepping for. My background and qualifications matched exactly what they wanted. I had good responses to all the questions they asked me. I thought that I had a good rapport with some of the interviewers. Apart from the fact that one of them kept looking at his watch 😲 how rude!

I did not get the job and then learnt that someone internal got it and heard "through the grapevine" they were earmarked it even before the job advert went out ☹ I now realise that the man looking at his watch was probaly a sign he knew this interview was a waste of his time as he had already chosen the other person.

There is definitely no way of knowing - annoyingly!!

I had a MS Teams interview yesterday. They had interviewed all day, and I was the final (and 9th) candidate of the day.
The interview itself felt rather conversational by the end and I felt very at ease, but they all had brilliant poker faces and gave no indication either way of how it went. They said I could expect to hear either way by Monday afternoon.

I had a call at 5pm last night telling me that I had got the job 😀 they gave me some brilliant feedback over the phone and truly flattered me with some of the things they said about my performance and suitability for the role.

I would have had no idea based off their body language and words at interview!

So basically - try not to think about it too much. If they are professional interviewers, they won't give you much indication either way xx
