Break entitlements

Ok so it's been a couple of years since I last worked but in the past most jobs would give a lunch and two 15 minute breaks. This current job (retail) has 9+ hour shifts with only a 30 minute lunch break. I suppose it must have been in the contract somewhere but...oooft.

Is this commonplace these days?

That’s all you’re entitled to - 30 minutes break for every 6 hours worked. Where I work (NHS) I work longer days (think 8.30/6) and get one 30 minute break, might get a quick cuppa break but it’s at the manager’s discretion because technically it’s paid. It seems a lot to start with but you get used to it.

You are legally entitled to a 20 min break for every 6 hours you work. That's all.
Most employers would give longer for long shifts but unfortunately don't need to.
I'm lucky that I work in an office so the 30 mins I get doesn't seem too bad but if I was on my feet all day that would kill me.

I work for the nhs and we work 12.5 hour shifts but we are only entitled to a 30 minute break.

Yes, entitlement is only 20 mins, if the shift is longer than 6 hours.

As breaks are usually unpaid, people usually don't want more. Where I work, people would prefer not to have a break and finish 20 mins earlier (although they can't) they certainly don't want their day extending by having extra breaks

I too work in retail and for a 9 hour shift I get 1.5 hr break which is unpaid so I only get 7.5 hours of wages.

I'm not any more in touch than you OP but remember breaks in retail to be the same as you do. Tea breaks were paid but lunch unpaid back in the day, is the 30 minute break you get paid now paid or unpaid? One thing I am aware of is many retail shifts in recent years have been deliberately short to mean no break at all so often people end up with all the travel costs of a full time job for very part time hours so if your job is full days it could be a lot worse.

Wanderlusto · 16/12/2020 07:33

Unpaid. Yeah I would totally get preferring to leave earlier rather than another break if it wasn't for being on your feet. But as is, I'd gladly take another 15 minutes unpaid.

Anything less than 6 hours we don't get any break either. Even if we work through lunch hours.
