Change of work

Hello All, I need your views on switching to a different company. The new company is paying me about £6K more and I like the work challenges, it will broaden my skills. However, my query is regarding bonus.

I will lose bonus from current company as it is paid April 2021 next year (for Jan 2020 - Dec 2020) but only paid if still in employment. I will not be eligible for the new company's bonus as I wouldn't have accrued anything.

What is the industry norm? Can I ask the new company to compensate me for this loss? We are talking around £3K gross bonus. Please advise and genuinely looking for constructive answers. Please be kind and no negative comments please.

Highly unlikely unless the new company specifically offered "golden hellos" - it's the risk you take when moving companies before you've been paid bonus

We would compensate you for this loss...I don't know what standard is, companies vary so much but you can certainly ask - it's a loss you will incur, so it's a reasonable request - they can always say no. Can you delay your start date until after your bonus because that's the other option?

We would compensate you if we thought you were worth it. It would be worth asking at least.

Or, is it paid if you're still in employment but have given in your notice? If you're on (say) 3 months notice it might be worth hanging in for another few weeks so you're eligible for it at the old place.

We would compensate you if we thought you were worth it. If we didn't think you were worth a signing on bonus of £3k, we wouldn't have offered you the job in the first place!

Thank you all for the replies. It does say employed at the payment date (so I think it would be okay if I am on notice, but not 100% sure). However, my notice period is 2 months, so, would be tricky to keep the new company waiting till end of March. I might speak to them and see what they say in terms of compensating for it, fingers crossed!
