Making a business case for a pay rise?

I know that this seems like terribly bad timing, given what is ongoing at the moment, but basically this has been a significant year for me work-wise. I've been fundamentally involved in launching a large work project that has the potential to span years and have a massive positive impact on the company as a whole, as well as achieving professional qualifications (basically the industry equivalent of an honours degree). I have had vague discussions with my team leader regarding a payrise, and was asked to submit a business case for this.

I have never done anything like this before - is there a format that is recommended? My googling has not provided any useful results! I've gathered all my points but think a bullet pointed list might be a big naff? Although there are a lot of points! Would be very grateful for any help/guidance!

Do you have formal reviews? Is there a pay rise structure?

If you have a competency matrix you need to be able to cross check and say yes, I do x, y, z, here are the examples.

I do have formal reviews which are always scored really well. We don't have a particularly formal structure - our HR function is outsourced. I can absolutely demonstrate a number of ways I've went over and above my job responsibilities.

Hi @MrsTea301, following as this applies to me now in my current position, and I successfully put a business case forward for my previous role in the Police for a payrise also.

If you work in an organisation which has pay grades/bands, you will need to identify which pay grade you think your work warrants, find a job description or internal policy of jobs which already get paid that amount, and then provide 3 to 4 examples of times you've met each criteria. Basically making a portfolio. The reason you need so many examples is so that it can be justified that you consistently work above your current pay grade, as opposed to "one off's" that we all ultimately get roped into over the course of our jobs!

Will follow this thread. Good luck, OP! 👍🏻

How about making a table where the left hand column lists out your responsibilities (detailed) and the right hand column lists how you've delivered against them.

Then bullets below, such as:

  • consistent high level delivery against objectives
  • excellent feedback from management
  • performance consistent with (insert next level up of job title)
